Judeo-Christian Holidays This Week

Any BBS members here who celebrate or observe Lent, Holy Week, Easter, or Passover this week? Although I consider myself a non-denominational Christian, I still celebrate Easter. I was raised as a Catholic in another country, and it's quite interesting to note the differences in the observances of Easter in the U.S. and in my birthplace and other countries as well. Where I grew up, there was a much more religious observance of the Lent season (reenactments of the Passion, processions, etc.).

My family members (some of whom are Catholics) usually attend the Easter mass, which I myself haven't done in a few years. On a personal level, it makes me reflect on my faith, and the gospels give a message of hope, redemption, and renewal to Christians.

I celebrate Easter; it's my favorite holiday of the year. I don't do candy eggs and the Easter bunny, though. I keep it strictly religious.

I want to get into the other holidays, but I wasn't raised celebrating them, so I don't have the inertia to begin. I keep saying that I will, but other stuff gets in the way. I was invited to a seder this year, but I have to go to class instead. Here's hoping for next year.

I'd like to add that when I was growing up, we didn't have Easter bunnies and Easter egg hunts. Most Catholics in my community observed Good Friday and Black Sabbath (everyone went to the beach or the river or had family picnics). It was believed that the water would wash away people's sins.

Do you call the Saturday before Easter the Black Sabbath? Is it common knowledge? I never heard that before in Italy. That's awesome!

My family are atheists, for the most part. We don't celebrate Easter, except for giving the little kids toy bunnies and candy. That's it. The adults don't really celebrate at all. We stick out head out the door and say, "Oh look. It's Spring." *slam*

Christmas, however, is another matter. My mom's family were German, so Christmas, was always a big deal to her. Our Christmas decorations and celebrations would put Martha Stewart to shame. I definitely inherited that from her.

Sugar is against my religion. (I'm hypoglycemic).

I celebrate Black Sabbath. Usually mixed with a little Zepplin and, of course, The Who's Won't Get Fooled Again.

My wife is from an 85% Catholic country. In her case the family is mixed with Islam and us Born Agains as local slang calls us. She was shocked that the country doesn't close down for Holy Week, much less just Good Friday. It didn't take long to get accustomed to life were other faiths and those with a lack of faith make up more then a micro minority of the country.

I'm at one of those churches that didn't pass out palm leaves last Sunday, Personally I got shocked when I found out my home church would be holding Good Friday services this year but we probably will attend a Catholic service if we go Friday.

I'm catholic and have been observing Lent. I will also attend Holy Thursday, and Good Friday masses this year. Probably not the 3 hour Easter Vigil on Saturday night since my daughter is only 18 months old. We will be there on Easter Sunday though.
