Jonathan Del Arco: PIC was originally going to be a Borg spinoff show

I guess it explains why they were so focused on the Borg across all three seasons. It was originally supposed to be about Hugh and Seven of Nine and the xBs.

But it sounds like Hugh was not originally planned to be killed off. A consequence of changing the showrunner. oh, what could have been.

Finally!

The long awaited show about the Federation's worst enemy!

James was the showrunner on The Closerand Major Crimes and a very dear friend of mine and Jeri [Ryan]’s, and he had been hired to come very early on, one of the early executive producers and writers of a spin-off of Star Trek. We didn’t know what it was. There was no Picard yet. It was a spin-off of Star Trek. Alex Kurtzman, James Duff, and I believe maybe one other writer was involved at the time, and James really wanted it to be a Borg spin-off. That’s why he talked to Jeri and I, and really started talking to them about it being this Borg storyline. And somewhere within that he discussed it with us maybe a year before it even happened. And they didn’t have Patrick yet. So I think then they went and made the pitch to Patrick. But had Patrick not done it, some kind of show about the Borg would have happened. It would not have been Picard, it would have been a show about the Borg. And you can even tell how heavily Borg-influenced it was. So the Borg was really the the kernel, from what I understand of of the beginning of that idea. And once Patrick became involved, the pieces began to fall into place, and we were set up and given deals to come be a part of the show. What I was not told was that I was getting killed, because that was not James’s plan. And James left the show before they began filming. He had a creative differences and left, I think, weeks before I even began. I’d signed my contract, and the people that were left, I think, then made that decision without my being told or even knowing about it through gossip. I read it in a script.

Sounds more like Duff proposed a Borg show, but Kurtzman didn’t want that, but liked the idea of having Hugh and 7 of 9 be part of what he did want: a show about Picard.

Man, that explains so much about that first season, and why the Borg side of the story never really went anywhere. It sucks for poor Hugh that he was killed off for being a remnant of an older premise who had no role to play in the conclusion of the final story. And I'm not surprised creative differences were part of the problem.

It definitely sounds a bit more like a Borg show was proposed, Kurtzman didn't want it, but some of the idea were recycled into PIC.

That actually makes sense. All of the Borg parts seem kind of added on and could be eliminated and nothing is lost from the main narrative (they'd just need a different storyline for Soji and Narek); and, from the behinds the scenes stuff, it seemed that Chabon was more interested in telling a Picard story involving the Romulans.

I think it could have been a nice spin off show, but then they killed of Hugh and that as we say was that.

Of course considering this show started as an attack on Mars and the Federation giving up the Romulan evacuation, that might have been a better storyline.

They should not have added in the Borg stuff. It took a lot away from the Romulans which is an pretty glaring omission for an alien race not explored.
They could have kept the Borg stuff while focusing on the Romulans. Keeping the action focused on the Artifact cube and the Romulan Free State could have turn PIC into a new DS9.

In hindsight, they should have killed of Rios in the first season (considering what happened to his character), and kept Hugh around.

In hindsight:

  • No Borg. Completely useless as a plot point.
  • Increase Elnor's role, especially as someone trying to fight against the Zhat Vash, who prove more duplicitous, while Elnor has more inexperience and almost honor driven which would lead him to be defeated once until he learns.
  • Show off the remnant of the Romulan power structure and explore why they were so strapped to evacuate, including internal power struggles post Dominion War and Shinzon's coup, Spock's role, and various sects that led to mismanagement and more death.
  • Rios is killed trying to warn Starfleet. Picard takes command.
  • No Maddox. No Hugh
  • Clancy arrives with Riker to save the day.

Clancy was the one who was originally supposed to be leading the fleet in the S1 finale. It's just that when they made the arrangements to use the Disco bridge set, they realized Jonathan Frakes was already there directing the Disco episode that was filming at the time so they decided "okay, Riker's commanding the fleet now."

I'm just gonna say it: I'm a fan of Season 1. Season 2 was just Bizarro World and CSI: Picard most of the season. Season 3 was just Titan, TNG reunion, changelings, surprise ending. Season 1 was actual Star Trek in that we got to a lot of different places. Earth, La Sarina, Vandish, Riker & Troi's world, Coppulus, the artifact (borg cube), plus various locations across those settings. We got to explore the La Sirena and the Borg cube artifact. We got to see both new and legacy characters. So many great characters. Honestly, this might actually be my favorite season of the three.

Season 2 was fun trying to be CSI, but it just feels like a long movie.
Season 3's TNG reunion was also fun, but it also feels more like a long movie.
Season 1 just felt like it had a lot more going on than let's do the same thing for 10 hours.

I'd put season 1 above the others any day as well. You're not alone.

Don't get me wrong, I love all 3 seasons. S2 suffering from becoming CSI: Picard, too present-day Earth bound. Would have been fine for 2-3 episodes, maybe half the season. We end up on present-day Earth halfway through the 3rd episode and stay there until the season finale is almost over. If we're thinking screen time and not strictly episode count, it's basically 3/10 Trek, 7/10 CSI. Season 3 was good, but it suffered from they never leave the ship except to go to dark, generic sets.

S1: I can give generic descripts of each episode and you'll know which one.
S2: I can generically describe the first 3 episodes and the finale, and you'll know which ones. However, if I try to describe generically episodes 4-9, will you be able to know where one ended and the next began?
S3: Honestly, it just felt like a 10-hour episode. I need to give it a 2nd viewing.
