I don't follow the private lives of any actors in Trek or otherwise, let alone the life of an actor playing a minor character.
I wasn't trying to determine anything about his sexual preferences, I was trying to work out if they were doing something with the character or if I was reading too much into it.
I've worked in the fashion industry for several years. I've probably worked with more gay men than straight men, so it's very possible I might have developed some kinda advanced gaydar.
I just found it remarkable that you could pick it out. I only knew he was gay because of the coverage surrounding the announcement of his casting in the show, and usually have no interest into the personal lives of actors. If you put this actor next to a straight actor and told me one was gay and I had no prior knowledge, I probably would get it wrong 50% of the time as I would only be guessing.
I would say his voice inflections were what set off my gaydar.

He's soft spoken, but that's common in lots of men. Bob Ross in particular had a similar tone and he was straight, it's just how some men speak. I really don't see Hugh as gay, straight or any sexuality in particular.
He was playing Hugh in TNG in a situation where that would never come up, but it's 20+ years later and he's been deBorgified (to the extent of Seven at least), has a life and a job. Like Seven, I'm sure he's at least experimented with sexuality.
Of course depending on his role in the show, we may never find out.
He was playing a younger High recently released from the Borg Collective, then. There has been something like twenty-five years in which High has had time to develop as an individual beyond that bare starting point.
Apparently, according to the article, the simple curiosity of High was inspired by witnessing his partner's AIDS-related dementia, and he auditioned for the role still in a state of shock and grieving after said partner's recent death. His portrayal of the character has advanced beyond that bare starting point.
Do I think that Hugh, from his first appearance, could be read as gay? I can see it: There is something about the patterns of his speech that evokes it for me.
I would just have to question if it matters. What is wrong with a Hugh who might be read as gay? The character was never established as straight, after all. What little we have seen suggests that he is an assertive and competent individual working on difficult circumstances.
It doesn’t matter, I just don’t get how anyone determines someone’s sexuality based on how they speak. It seems like you’re basing it on stereotypes that aren’t necessarily accurate.
I didn’t know Del Arco was gay until I read it here. And he certainly didn’t come across as gay to me in the way he spoke or acted. Nor do I care. And I’m not sure why it was necessary to even bring it up.
Anyway, I actually found him to be rather underwhelming in his first episode. I hope he gets to shine later, but I have a feeling he’s going to get killed.

Bob Ross was a Sergeant in the Air Force stationed in Alaska.

Are we sure about that? I mean, he WAS a drill sergeant after all.
To me he sounds nothing like Bob Ross. If anything I thought he spoke in a similar tone to Marc Evan Jackson, just not as exaggerated in inflections.
And no it doesn't matter, but this is a discussion board where very little of the discussion here actually matters. It would be no different to me asking is Picard British because I'm picking up British vibes from him, or is it just the actor who is British. Lets not try make this a thing when it's not intended that way.
I could tell he was gay based on how the muscles around his mouth moved. I’m serious. There are specific tells and inflections you can spot.
I can tell when someone is straight based on whether his a** hair is curly or straight (<--ha!)

Oh For Fuck's Sake. There is no Universal Standard of Gay Mannerisms. I've met plenty of gays who'd flunk every "tell" you could think of, and a fair number of totally straight people who a lot of people would peg as gay in a heartbeat.
