That is way too money for one person to get for a film. But neither of the sequels interested me ... and most likely neither will this one.

I don't blame him for doing a fourth film when he's getting paid that much. If I was him I would already be signed on for Pirates 5 and 6.

One of the main reason movie ticket prices are $10.00 plus dollars to get in and popcorn/coke will cost ya another $10.00 plus.
It always cracks me up to hear on commentaries how "grueling" their 3 month shoot was

What?! The Guy is already a millionaire ten times over, has been for years. What difference will 61 million more make for his happiness and lifestyle? You can support an African country with that. I find it ridiculous that people are getting paid that much for an acting job. Same goes for soccer players, tennis player, etc. I'd be ashamed to accept that much money!

Well, I would hope Depp does something constructive with some of his money in the way of helping others. Depp should do what Sean Connery did for Diamonds Are Forever, and donate it or start a school or something.

Well the two sequels together made 2 billion, so I think they can afford 61mil for its sole star (Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly aren't coming back; Geoffery Rush is supposed to return but he obviously won't be getting a big paycheck).

I thought that Tobey Maguire getting $50m for two, count them 2 Spidey films(4&5), movies being shot back to back was high but fairly reasonable considering some actors have gotten the $20-25m paycheck for one film.

Actually, business wise, it makes perfect sense. How many dollars worth of the Pirates franchise do you think is attributable to him? That's the formulation that goes through executive's heads when it comes to how much a movie star is worth. And Depp is more than worth it for this franchise. If he got paid that much for something else, it would be a different story. But that would never happen, so...

What was the previous record? I haven't heard of anything above $30-35 million for a single movie before, and Depp is getting almost twice that. I do wonder what the negotiations were like and what was running through the minds of both sides as they made the deal.

However, I agree with T'Baio that it's sound business, actually. Both sequels made about $1bn worldwide each. And that's just the box office, no merchandise, no DVDs, royalties etc. It's anyone's guess how much they made in total.
In any case, $61m is small in comparison.
I'll also say that I'd have never expected an actor like Johnny Depp who's actually really good as an actor and seldom seemed like a mainstream Hollywood actor to be the one raking in the cash like that. It's a small comfort but it IS a comfort

Dark Horizons says the figure is $56m for what its worth. Not that it matters its still a new record. Which to answer Smiley was held by Tom Hanks for his upcoming Angels&Demons(DaVinci Code follow-up) which netted him $29m(pounds?) for that one pic.
