Johnny Depp as Nick Charles, The Thin Man?

Depp's a better fit for the part than Clooney, especially if they keep the boozy aspect.

How quickly people forget! The role that first brought Clooney to prominence, Doug Ross in ER, was a bit of a boozehound. IIRC, in his first episode, possibly his first ever scene, he was drunk and had to be put on an IV drip to sober up!

Maybe this is very unfair of me, but Clooney strikes me as very boozy.
Clooney only does well in a narrow range and the part of Nick Charles is well beyond it.

Don't be fooled by Depp's portrayal of boozehound Hunter S. Thompson. That's a Wild-Eyed Maniac role, not an elegant drunk role.
There's nothing elegant about the drunks Depp's played to date, but I think he could play an elegant drunk nonetheless.

There's a certain type of booziness Clooney is well capable of, one that plays to his strength - which is exploring the darker side of his glib screen persona. But an elegant booziness in the context of quick repartee with a romantic lead isn't something he's suited for in my opinion.

I think the idea of someone being "irreplaceable" is silly. Nora was created by Dashiell Hammett, whose characters have been interpreted numerous times by different actors (and, in the case of the Thin Man movies, radically revised into a comedy). The great roles in the theatre have been played by thousands of different people.

This is true, but if they're going to adapt a Hammett story into a movie, I would much rather see an adaptation of Red Harvest, or some other Continental Op story.

The Continental Op was the character about whom Hammett wrote the most. Yet, to my knowledge, he has never been shown onscreen.

He's, surprisingly, never been shown on the big screen, but The Dain Curse was adapted as a television miniseries starring James Coburn in the late 1970s.

Weird. I could have sworn there was a Continental Op series back in the 60s. I wonder what I'm thinking of.

Probably been suggested, but just go ahead and cast Depp in every adult male role. It'd save the aggravation of thinking about actors.

But if we could resurrect the dead, Gene Barry.
