Johnny Cash, Elvis and other legends

Elvis gets less praise from me because he didn't write any song he ever sung.
So? Neither did Frank Sinatra or Bing Crosby or Nat King Cole or Ella Fitzgerald. It's really only been since the mid-1960s, probably starting with the Beatles, that we expect singers to write their own songs or songwriters to perform their own material.

I have not listened to lot of his music and there are some songs I have liked but most just make no impression. I saw the movie and still didn't get it. His voice is okay but there are MANY country singers with better voices. His guitar playing appears average, his stage presence is...well, he's there, at least.

Who is your favorite country singer, or who represents that genre better in your opinion? I'm just curious.

And it's your opionion, no problem for me.

I keep on asking the same about German pop singer Helene Fischer: why do so many people buy her albums? She is able to present herself, but the songs are unrealistic, fanciful, quixotic and conservative. She is pleasant as person, but not as singer. (No offense to German Helene Fischer fans).

JC is obviously not your cup of tea. Period!.
 You completely misunderstood my post.

If anyone else would like to take a stab at explaining what they find so special about ash, I'd really appreciate it. , I'd really appreciate it.

Bob Dylan for instance is a great songwriter, but only an avarage singer.

I Not even that, he's the first to admit it. He's s poet, but he realised early that poets don't make money, so he set it to music. Always wonder if he'd been born 40 years later, he'd be a rapper.

I love the Pogues, even if Shane MacGowan is drunk as hell. He's between genius and madness. The Pogues ware managed by Joe Strummer (The Clash). There is a nice version of Redemption Song by Johnny Cash and Joe Strummer.

I saw the Pogues a few years ago and they are mind-blowingly good. The players in the band are so tight, it's unbelievable, I've never seen a band play so well together, they just all knew what each other were doing throughout.

The genius of what they do is contrasting the chaos of shane macgowen against their polished energy. It shouldn't work, but it does.

Then, you draw yourself away from the spectacle and realise just how good the guy is at writing lyrics.

The only band that's comparable to them in terms of that style, contrast ,and substance was Ian druary and the blockheads .

Shane used to puke onto fans several years ago. So I better listen to the Pogues from a certain distance.

One of my favorite songs is Summer in Siam. Shane may not be the best singer, but he beats most of the new generation singers who lack any distinctive image. Some of the casting show candidates, for instance. They are directed by others, have no mind of their own.

& they were all infinitely better singers than Elvis ever was. I always liked Torme better than Sinatra anyhow, for that very reason. Torme wrote, arranged, played instruments, & was a much more talented singer

And actually Cash was writing & playing in the 50's, as was Roy Orbison, who's music is wonderful & voice is way better. Besides, I'm not saying I shit on Elvis. I just said he gets less praise from me, specifically, less than Cash or Orbison do

Buddy Holly wrote his own song, as well.
