Johnny Cash, Elvis and other legends

Any Johnny Cash fans here?

There are Johnny Cash fans to be found on the forum of the German publisher of Star Trek novels (Cross Cult). So I asked myself, if there are Johnny Cash and/or Elvis fans here.

Johnny Cash has influenced whole generations of artistst/musicians. His songs are classics.

I love also songs by artists who are obviously Johnny Cash fans. As to Elvis, it's more his songs than the Elvis hype which fascinates me.

You should know that I don't have a single Elvis or Johnny Cash album, but love their songs nonetheless. :)

That's too bad.

Everybody should own a copy of At Folsom. Everybody.

A motivation for me to get it...... :) Or at least any Johnny Cash album. A best of... or someting like that.

I'm currently comparing several Folsom Prison Blues versions. The original is the best of course, but some performers show their admiration for Johnny quite convincingly...

While I've enjoyed some of his music, I am not a fan.

But I watched a documentary on his life, and learned that he wrote over fifteen hundred songs.

And that it was he who started the trend of hotel vandalism to let loose some steam.

But at least he didn't smash as many guitars as Pete Townshend.

I saw the movie Walk the Line on Tv. Joaquin Phoenix was a agreeable Johnny Cash.

I grew up listening to Johnny Cash. One of the first albums I recall listening to was my parents' copy of At Folsom Prison. We also watched the Johnny Cash Show on TV. Been a fan ever since.

You won't be surprised to hear that I like songs by Hank Williams, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings, too.

I remember Johnny Cash being guest of the German show Wetten Dass with Thomas Gottschalk as host.

Unfortunately most of the Germans have a bad taste in music and prefer pop songs (Schlager) which contents consisting of happiness and an idyllic worlds. It's almost unbearable. Sure, according to German history there can't be songs with historical events as texts. And people wouldn't buy it.
Country music is about story telling, history, yearning, gun-fights, personal mistakes, jealousy, broken families, contents to think about.

It all started with Irish and Scottish folk songs I came to like.... :)

Plus, Accordians and Big, Long BlowHorns! :techman:

Oh, Kilana, what does "Reeeeekolahhhhh" mean in German? I can't really find a translation...

I like Johnny Cash, and grew up with his music playing and his Specials on TV. (my Dad was the fan)

Never was much of an Elvis fan, and I really could not tell you why. Recognize the Talent, though.

Ricola is a company in Switzerland (Basel). They produce herbal candies (bonbons). Of course they export them. Use them when you have a cold..... :)

I grew up on Johnny Cash music, as well. After I started playing the organ, "Ring of Fire" was one song I learned - it was one of my grandmother's favorites.

No Elvis in my home, though, unless it was Elvis Stojko.

I indulged in some nostalgia on Canada Day, with some Stompin' Tom Connors videos, and waaay back, decades ago, Tommy Hunter was standard Friday night viewing, as were the Irish Rovers on Sunday nights.

I love the Pogues, even if Shane MacGowan is drunk as hell. He's between genius and madness. The Pogues ware managed by Joe Strummer (The Clash). There is a nice version of Redemption Song by Johnny Cash and Joe Strummer.

I find Elvis a little overrated. Maybe it's because I didn't live through his reign, (I'm only 31) but it's hard to really get into a lot of his songs.

One of the first radio songs I remember trying to learn the words to was "A Boy Named Sue" so I guess I became a fan in the "novelty" phase of Johnny Cash's career. I remember him being on Columbo when I was about four and knowing who he was. I saw JC in concert in about '87, before he became "cool" again, and with the Highwaymen in '90, and then in '97 with June Carter, their son John Carter, and her daughter Rosie Nix Adams. Sadly, JC, June and Rosie would all die in 2003.

As much as I like JC, I don't really like him better than Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, George Jones or Waylon Jennings, all of whom I've been lucky enough to see. I believe Hag is still touring pretty strong, I last saw him in 2012. The one guy I really wish I could have seen is Tom T. Hall.

Why is it that the new generation of country musicians/artists don't have the same impact on me as JC did?

My favorite German bands are all influenced by JC and Elvis.
(The Bosshoss, Johnny Trouble Trio, Bandana (a JC tribute band) to find on Youtube).

And I like Imelda May, Brian Setzer, Carlos and the Bandidos

And American bands and artists like The Railbenders, Reckless Kelly and Jason Lee Wilson.

It's a crying shame that I have to resort to youtube to find that kind of music.

I do it nonetheless, just to escape from Helene Fischer (the currently most successful German artist). ;)

I like his songs, but not the hype.
I like Elvis' earlier songs, but not his movies -- at least, not those silly formula pictures starting with G.I. Blues after his stint in the Army, and the crappy songs he had to sing in those movies. If he'd had the opportunity to do more serious dramatic roles, I'm sure he could have become a much better actor.

Elvis gets less praise from me because he didn't write any song he ever sung. He's just a performer, & in his heyday, he was a great one, but that heyday lasted for about 5 years after his movie career ended. From 68 to 73 he was legendary, before that he was a pop sensation, & then a terrible movie star. After that he was a tragedy.

I'm not as big into Johnny Cash's music as I am Willie Nelson's, but I am quite awed by Cash as a person

When it comes to music, I have an extremely open mind. I mean, "I;m ready to like you" regardless of the genre or category of the music. If I like it, I don't care. But for the life of me I cannot figure out what it is that people find so great about Johnny Cash. Sometimes even when I don't really care for an artist, I can still see what others may find really compelling about a particular artist. This has eluded me with Cash.

I have not listened to lot of his music and there are some songs I have liked but most just make no impression. I saw the movie and still didn't get it. His voice is okay but there are MANY country singers with better voices. His guitar playing appears average, his stage presence is...well, he's there, at least.

Can someone enlighten me. Not meant as a troll or criticism, I'm really puzzled.

Who is your favorite country singer, or who represents that genre better in your opinion? I'm just curious.

And it's your opionion, no problem for me.

I keep on asking the same about German pop singer Helene Fischer: why do so many people buy her albums? She is able to present herself, but the songs are unrealistic, fanciful, quixotic and conservative. She is pleasant as person, but not as singer. (No offense to German Helene Fischer fans).

JC is obviously not your cup of tea. Period!.

My favorite Johnny Cash trivia is this: one of my favorite groups, the Statler Brothers, got their start opening up for Johnny on his TV show.
