John Logan Deleted Wesley's Speaking Scene from NEM!

TWOK was better w/o the deleted scenes. Most of the scenes cut back into TMP's Special Longer Version shoulda stood on the cutting room floor as well.

I liked the deleted Wesley scene in Nemesis. I mean why have him at the wedding and not give him a little speaking part?

I thought that the scenes in the restoration of Meyer's original cut of the movie added rather than subtracted from the story. The first one being the Peter Preston nephew comment, which explained Scotty's emotional state later in sickbay. Also, the scene between Kirk and Bones a few moments later in the same sickbay scene was very much like several scenes in TOS between them, especially in the first season. It also showed that Kirk acknowledges he did make a big mistake and that he knew that he nearly suffered a more devastating blow. It gave us that great line and delivery by Shatner, "We're only alive because I knew something about these ships that he didn't."

I am, however, glad that they left he "half-Romulan" comment and the David-Saavik romance subplot on the cutting room floor. I think that it's more powerful if Saavik were a full Vulcan who was prone to emotional outbursts like in the simulator scene.

If memory serves, Meyer's original cut lacked Spock saying 'Remember Me', or the final bit with Kirk and Carol and McCoy looking out into space, and, of course, the final shot of the tube. My memory may be faulty on this one, but those were added to give a bit more optimism and leave the door open for Spock's return.

The Director's Cut DVD, of course, included the added bit with Spock's tube and the "Remember" sequence but restored what was in his original cut. Meyer's original cut, that was screened and led to the additional scenes, ended with Kirk, Carol and McCoy looking out at the planet. The whole "I feel young" line was always part of the movie and how Meyer wanted it to end. In fact, thematically it is the stronger ending; however, Bennett was right in saying that they needed to give the fans a little hope.

Wesley's and Worf's presence in Starfleet uniforms never bothered me. They're at a formal event. They wear their best outfits. AFAIK, they're both still Starfleet officers, even if they're:

1) away with the Travelers, or
2) on a diplomatic posting.

Wesley wasn't a Starfleet officer. He was a cadet, and he resigned from Starfleet Academy, making him a civilian at the time he left with the Traveler. At the wedding he's wearing a Lt(jg) uniform, a rank he never held in TNG. So it's not just a matter of him wearing his nicest clothes--he has definitely returned to Starfleet. Although maybe he's just a reservist, so he can spend most of his time exploring higher states of existence or whatever.

Worf could still be an inactive or retired officer, though.

The Relaunch TNG novels from A Time to... series say:
that Wesley is still a Traveller. He showed up naked at the wedding and Captain Picard had the Enterprise beam down a uniform for him to wear. So why was the freaking rank insignia on the uniform??? Who knows....
Wow, that was their explanation?
Glad I never read those books

And in exchange of said hope, diffused any real peril and eliminated any realistic character growth and change and the introduction of the dreaded "reset button" which has been in modern Trek ever since.

^Well, I do prefer the ending without the whole final bit. As I said, it is the stronger ending that fits with the themes of the movie.

I would've liked to have seen Trek play out if Spock stayed dead. For what that might've been like, I suggest reading the first few issues of DC comics first Trek comic run. Saavik as science-officer and Kirk, still an Admiral, in command of the Enterprise.

Good points. We know that Wesley was given a field ensign's rank by Picard, and even if he retired, maybe he'd still hold the honorary position when he returned. I didn't pay attention to the pips, so that puts the kibosh on my rationalization.

I have the deleted scene so I wrote it down. Here's what the scene looks like on the special edition DVD deleted scenes section:

-"WESLEY'S NEW MISSION"-
---------------------------

Picard is standing by a table with drink in hand. Dr. Crusher joins him.

CRUSHER
(Regarding Riker/new crewmen) Sort of like loosing a son and gaining an empath, isn't it?

PICARD
(Sarcastic) You're being a big help.

CRUSHER
Listen, if you start tearing up I promise I'll beam you out immediately.

[We see Riker & Troi leaving the dance floor. Wesley joins Crusher/Picard]

WESLEY
Mom! ...Captain.

PICARD
Wesley, it’s good to see you in uniform again.

WESLEY
Thank you sir.

CRUSHER
Suits him, doesn’t it?

PICARD
You’re looking forward to serving on the Titan?

WESLEY
I am very much. I’ve got the night-duty shift in engineering and we’ve got a double-refracting warp core matrix with twin intermix chambers.
(Sees hot chick)
Would you excuse me for a moment? I’ll see you later.
(Walks over to hot chick)

Pretty gag-inducing and extraneous, I'd say. *SNIP SNIP*

What was worse was that Wheaton was playing the part extra-gay! I mean you had to wonder if that hot chick had a cock tucked in between her legs.

The theatrical version and the directors cut have the exact same endings ... do they?

GOOD! Wesley was an annoying plot device so he could come in and act like Will Robinson and save the day when the grown ups cannot figure out was was going on !
