My first memory of Hillerman was from the old NBC series Ellery Queen, where he played Simon Brimmer, a rival detective. I saw a lot of Brimmer in his portrayal of Higgins.

What a wonderful cast on Magnum P.I. They characters were so well developed they could play scenes with just looks. Hillerman was good in everything, but Higgins and the way Hillerman developed the depth in him was sometime special in my TV-watching life. Very sorry he's gone.
