This is one time I'll gladly take form over "function": the neck-less designs are ugly as hell.

Ive always thought that and the pylons to be the weakest part of the original/refit design and the only real fault to jefferies. Same goes for the Klingon Battlecruiser (and the Bird of Prey after), it would seem to tempting a target to try and sever the neck area and figurativly decapitate it.
If we take the classic Star Trek design you are absolute right on ,,the nacelles are still out on pylons just like always,, however i disagree with that the neck-less Enterprise-E didn't fix the TOS Enterprise thin neck problems. It gave Enterprise more sleekness and made it more compact. The connection between engineering hull and saucer is better giving you more routes betweens those 2 sections.ancient said:

This has never bothered me. We've never seen a ship get cut in two, so we have no idea how strong the pylons are. But it seems to me that if you can easily cut through the pylon you can just as easily cut the whole engineering section in half.
So I consider the neckless Ent_E a pointless 'fix' to the design. Besides, the nacelles are still out on pylons just like always. I don't think all the ships need to look like the Defiant. They aren't battleships, equiping them to fight is more of an afterthought, at least in TOS.
In TOS weapons were hidden from view. On the ENT-E there were weapons sticking out all over the place like some kind of dreadnought. Starfleet kept getting more and more militaristic. But I don't think we need to reverse-engineer that onto TOS designs.
Besides, it just looks better with a neck.
