John Cho is the new Sulu?

I met him at a party in NYC once. He seemed tired but nice enough to pose photos. Can't believe he's 35 already!
I hope he doesn't try to fly the Eneterprise to White Castle...
By the 23rd C, what are the odds Sulu would be 100% Japanese, anyway? He could be ethnically mainly Korean (or Chinese or Vietnamese or whatever) by then. Surnames don't mean anything other than you have a remote male ancestor of that ethnicity. Japanese-Americans are not so weirdly racist that they refuse to marry outside their ethnicity - in fact, I can't think of ANY examples of Japanese-Americans I know who have married within their ethnicity, and I live in San Francisco in the 21st C. By the 23rd, all the purebreds will be extinct, so stop stressing about it!
To be fair he was decent in the few dramatic roles he had.

Funny, though: wasn't the Japanese Hoshi Sato played by a Korean actress? As one who knows a bit about the region (I was an English teacher in Korea for six months about ten years ago--I can eat noodles with chopsticks!), I can safely say that the enmity between the Koreans and The Japanese is pretty deep--DS9 borrowed from it to flesh out the Bajoran enmity for Cardassians. Not a complaint, really--I actually find it somewhat heartening, though I wonder if a Korean national would.
Yes she was. And the Japanese Keiko O'Brien was played by Chinese-American actress Rosalind Chao. (Who played also played Klinger's Korean wife on M*A*S*H) And I think Harry Kim was of Korean ancestry but played by Chinese-American Garrett Wang. So its a Trek tradition.
Then they need to get over it. Seriously, Star Trek is supposed to be opposed to such nonsense, not cater to it!
I thought the Cardies were Nazis and the Bajorans were either Russians or Jews. Or the Cardies are Israelis and the Bajorans were Palestinians. Or the Cardies are the Centauri and the Bajorans are the Narn (cue War Without End theme music
). But this is the first time I've heard the Japanese and Koreans dragged into it. I guess it's no worse - or better - than any other suggestion. I think this is like the Klingon thing - are they Russians? Vikings? Samurai? Spartans? All of the above?
Haha when I found out that they chose Cho to play Sulu, well I have a hard time picturing it.

Temis I don't know if you remember it but we had this same argument in the Gen. Trek forum. I was the one who insisted that Cardassian occupation in many ways resemble more like the Japanese occupation of East Asia. While I only mentioned the Chinese however the Koreans also suffered a similar fate.
