John Cho is the new Sulu?

JacksonArcher

Vice Admiral

According to TrekMovie he is. Cho is known for his roles in the American Pie movies and most recently in Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle and its upcoming sequel. He joins Leonard Nimoy, Zachary Quinto, Anton Yelchin, Zoe Saldana, Eric Bana and Simon Pegg, recently announced to play Scotty.

And as I suspected ... Kirk will be the last cast. Saving the best for last I see. ;)

This is an awesome piece of casting! Go Cho! This cast is looking awesome IMO!

Cho is the worst piece of casting yet. The others casting choices are quite good. The guy from American Pie is pretty poor choice.

I've never seen him do anything serious, but hey; if Simon Pegg was the best at his audition, then, well, so was this guy.

Sulu isn't s Japanese name. I know the character is but the name isn't. So Cho being Korean doesn't make much different to me. All I care is can the guy act.

I'm only familiar with Cho in his guest appearance on House. He was all right. I will reserve judgment on this casting until I see the movie.

Maybe Sulu is a Japanese name in the 23rd Century as the language evolved? If he had a real Japanese last name would you care that Cho was Korean?

Sulu was born in San Francisco. Hikaru is a Japanese word, while Sulu is not. It really doesn't matter that Cho is Korean, because Hikaru Sulu is an American.

It's not as if the Sulu role is particularly challenging. Cho will do just fine.

Huh? I doubt there would be so much language evolution in 200 years that entirely new surnames would be invented. Sulu IIRC was said to be of mixed asian ancestry. Which is why he has a Japanese first name and a non-Japanese last name. There was even a scene in STIV where runs across an ancestor in Chinatown. A friend of mine is of Japanese and Korean ancestry, even though her last name is Korean she calles herself a Japanese-American.

Same here. But I automatically think of American Pie and White Castle (or whatever its called) when I hear his name. I don't care for the genre of his films and therefore never really cared for the actor. But at least people know who he is (even if he isn't a A, B, or C list actor).

I really like this guy(John Cho). He is a good choice and my hats off for Abrams(wait a minute i dont have any hats.)

TBH, I don't remember him in American Pie and I haven't seen Harold & Kumar.

I don't really get the 'He isn't Japanese!' protests. Simon Pegg isn't Scottish, nor was James Doohan. William Shatner was Canadian, not American. And Patrick Stewart is English, not French. To me, he looks reasonably like a young George Takei.

Nor do I get the 'He's a comedy actor!' protests. Apart from the theory that comedy is supposed to be the hardest of acting to pull off, many comedy actors have gone on to do dramatic roles. Heath Ledger's first major role was in a high school comedy, IIRC (20 Things I Hate about You). And I trust that Cho gave a good audition, leading to his being cast. So him being Sulu works for me.

Dont like this bit of casting, he can't act for crap! There are many gifted Japanese actors out there chomping at the bit for a role like this, I don't get how the Korean non-actor got it.
