"John Carter of Mars" Moving Ahead!

Hmm, from all the reviews so far, I get the impression fans of the book are loving it, but everyone else is finding it a bit slow and hard to follow at times, with all the different characters and factions and politics involved.
Actually, I haven't read any of the books and I enjoyed it immensely. And although I probably didn't get every nuance of the politics, history, and technology, that didn't really detract from my enjoyment.

I didn't find the first book all that complex at all although I have the impression this first film incorporates many elements from the first four books or so into one film. That could make it more complex, but it doesn't necessarily mean it will automatically turn off a large segment of the audience.

That's actually the best news I've heard.

It's starting to feel like they just realized this movie was coming out soon, so they'd better start putting a little effort in.

Well, they're not exactly the first ten minutes.

(Also, I just posted that video two posts before yours, but never mind)

Damn, I just found out The Hunger Games also comes out this weekend. There's no way John Carter will stand a chance against that.

How ‘John Carter’ Succeeds Where the ‘Star Wars’ Prequels Failed

Interesting Star Wars franchise comparisons.
beefy hero, beautiful love interest, sweet weaponry, non-pandering comic relief, big aliens, and exciting flying things that could not look more like the speeder bikes from Return of the Jedi.
Stanton treats the more fantastical aspects of John Carter
like George Lucas did, “It’s just there, and who cares how it works or how it got made?” Overall, John Carter bears both many connections and thankful distances to the Star Wars series. Just how Luke Skywalker saw the vast universe Lucas created, there’s not one scene of Carter condescending to the mechanics or bizarro nature of the world – Mars
Which is why Star Wars is fantasy and not science-based sci-fi action
Tonally, John Carter isn’t concerned with taking itself too seriously, though Stanton does take Carter, the other characters, and the world they exist in seriously.
Look at the final battles in Episodes I, II, and III, it’s all brooding. What child is going to take joy in seeing Anakin quickly having his arm cut off by Count Dooku at the end of Attack of the Clones or the horrifying sight of Anakin nearly burned to death in Revenge of the Sith? Lucas always said those films are for kids, but what type of kid enjoys that brand of emo adventure? All kids will have fun seeing Carter, a hero one can mildly get behind, try to save the girl. There’s no tears or emotional speeches in John Carter. Unlike Lucas, Stanton keeps the tone light.
And this is why this film could be a real hit and a major franchise in the 2010s.

There is a bunch more with every one of the 6 SW films used as examples.

I think ultimately for this movie to be a hit, it's going to have to have legs. I have a feeling it's not going to have a big opening (not for a movie that cost 250 million dollars) but if it stays around long enough (ie, REALLY good word of mouth) then maybe it will be a major franchise.

But if it opens OK and then drops (and Hunger Games is opening soon) I don't think it will get a sequel.

Nope. THG is released two weeks after John Carter.

Yeah. It just seems like it's coming out now because it already has more buzz than JCM...
I could have sworn I heard someone talking about it coming out Friday. I must have remembered wrong, or misheard them.
