John Boyega's acting in TFA

Captain Nebula

Commander
Red Shirt
Went to see The Force Awakens again last night before it's no longer in the theater. One thing that really struck me was John Boyega's acting. Was he trying to imitate Matt Damon? Not just his voice, but his mannerisms, too. It was really weird. I didn't notice that the first time.

Anybody else get this feeling?

John Boyega's performance didn't remind me of Matt Damon. I thought Boyega was one of the best things about the movie, which I found rather disappointing.

His American accent is a bit on the nose. He doesn't waver on it, but it has a quality to it that on occasion doesn't feel quite organic. I never had a problem with it and only really noticed it on my second or third watch. Maybe that is what you're picking up?

Having heard what Mr. Boyega sounds like in real life, I wish they hadn't forced an American accent on him, and he leans on his much mocked "heavy breathing" face a bit too much at the beginning of the film, but otherwise he is quite solid throughout the film.

I thought he was great. I think he had the hardest job too.
Rey was the main character but she didn't really say much about what was going on in her head, and didn't really have anyone who understood what was going on with her to talk to. Then you had the old guys, robots and Poe Dameron who had very little screen time.
Finn was the one who was focused and in the present the whole time, and I though Boyega carried it really well.

I am looking forward to seeing what expanded role Finn has in the next film. I would love for him and Poe to go some missions together, you can tell that John and Isaac have good chemistry, and since Han bit the big one we need a buddy duo to replace his and Chewie's dynamic.

I believe Finn is also a main character.

Their relative billing would have likely been in the contracts they signed for the whole trilogy.

I didn't get a Matt Damon vibe from him. He did an excellent job playing a very interesting character and still kept the performance personal.

To be honest, Matt Damon does a similar thing but they have different ways of doing it.
