Joe the Barbarian

Allyn Gibson

Vice Admiral
Admiral
For those who aren't aware, the hardcover collection of Grant Morrison and Sean Murphy's Joe the Barbarian came out yesterday. A young boy (the titular Joe) who suffers from juvenile diabetes must make his way from his bedroom to his kitchen in search of insulin when his blood sugar goes wonky, and in the course of his trip he hallucinates himself into a fantasy adventure where his toys have come to life and they have been oppressed by dark and sinister forces.

What does this have to do with Star Trek literature?

One of the characters is a Captain Picard action figure. (Based on the artwork, I'd say it's the first Playmates figure, with Picard in what I always called the "Flak Jacket" -- it's a fifth season Picard.) Picard even refers to Joe as "The boy" at one point. :)

There's a fantastic two page spread where Picard and Worf (complete with bat'leth) are teamed with Batman, Superman, and Lobo as they enter a pitched battle against Optimus Prime and his forces.

Brilliant stuff, one of the best comics I read last year.
