Joe Simon, co-creator of Captain America, has died

Out Of My Vulcan Mind

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Joe Simon has passed away at the venerable age of 98. Simon and Jack Kirby created Captain America, The Sandman, Manhunter, the Boy Commandos and the Newsboy Legion in the 1940s. Simon later created the short-lived counterculture satirical comics Brother Power, the Geek and Prez in the late 1960s and early 1970s respectively.

Rest in peace, Joe Simon.

I'm glad he lived to see the success of the new CAPTAIN AMERICA movie. That must have been gratifying.

Sad news....I agree with Greg. I am sure he knew that his character would live on.

And just barely a week after the death of Jerry Robinson.

Truly a terrible month for comics.
And more bad news - even worse given that it's a death at a younger age - comic book artist Eduardo Barreto, whose prolific career included work on The New Teen Titans and The Shadow Strikes!, has died at the age of 57.

Joe Simon's loss will be felt, but I'm glad that he lived to see his most famous character restored after the Death Of Captain America storyline.

I had fun reading about Joe Simon the other day. He and Jack Kirby jumped from Timely (Marvel) to National (DC) comics and managed to go from making under $100 a week to $500 a week.

He was actually born and raised in my hometown (Rochester, New York) and his first job was for the local paper. I've always had a strong connection to Captain America due to that. It's great that he lived a long life and was able to see the release of Captain America #600 this past year as well as see the movie.

RIP

A little disappointed that there are so few giving regards for Mr.Simon and yet Amy Winehouse gets pages of regrets.

More people have heard of her, quite simple. I'd regard myself as a geek, but couldn't have named Cap's creator off the top of my head. And she died prematurely, at the height of her fame, a young woman, who'd grown up in the spotlight. Mr Simon at least was lucky enough to live a long life and hadn't really been in the public eye for years.

Then I humbly submit you're not at the pinnacle of geekdom.

In any event, we should be glad he had such a long life and got to enjoy seeing cap in a major motion picture.

Rough month for comics. Simon dead, Robinson dead, Liefeld alive and kicking. wtf.

Well, if memory serves, half of those posts consisted of tasteless comments with the other half showing disgust at the tastelessness.

While I may not like Rob Liefeld's work, I don't wish him dead.
