Not really. It's simply using the analogy of the sport for which Smokin' Joe was so well known to mark the end of his final match, the one he had no chance of winning.

To call Frazier or Ali world champions has always been an overstatement. The Cuban Stevenson, multiple times olympic and amateur-world champion would also have been a match during the seventies.
