JMS tosses Forbidden Planet Script

I have a lot of respect for JMS, I really do, but sheesh, he can be such a drama queen sometimes. Grow the fuck up, Joe, and just be happy that you're making a good living writing sci-fi movies. Most people would kill to be in your position.

Instead he has temper tantrums about Internet leaks which, I guarantee you, will have no affect whatsoever on the performance of the movie. Hell, studios deliberately leak things to whores like Harry Knowles all the time to try to create a positive buzz about projects.

I'm not defending jms here, but he is right. People on the net have gotten this entitlement thing going on nowadays, where they think they are entitled to have anything they want for free. "Hey, that new cd is out, I'll download it for free" or "Hey, I don't feel like going to a crowded theater to see Watchmen, I'll just download it for free."

What these people are failing to realize is more than that it's illegal, but it really is destroying the very thing they seem to care about. Shows that are on the borderline are canceled - they are on the bubble, but dvd sales could push them over. Instead of buying the dvd, "fans" download the show. They have what they want. Instead of getting more of what they want, they've just ensured the final season of their show.

It happens all the time. Does that make it right? No. Not in this world, or any other.

You wouldn't work for free. Why should the writers, directors, producers, actors, etc., work for free?

I agree to an extent, in regards to SOME lost earnings. However, piracy has been rampant for decades. VCRs, audio cassette recorders.... and now you have cdrs, dvdrs, dvrs..... made by the very corps who piss and moan about illegal dl'n in the first place. All of these things are made with one thing in mind: piracy of some form. If it wasn't so, these forms of blank media would simply not be made.

So, if there is any drama to be spewed, throw it at the corps. it is 100% there fault. Don't blame the consumers for buying what the corps put out there, and using the products for what they were designed for. Direct the anger at the big corps, who pay outlandish figures to crap actors, when that money should be going to the peeps on the low end of the totem pole. Greed in the entertainment industry is 99% to blame for any lost "residuals" which JMS loves to scream about. He needs to get off the high horse and not slap away the hand that feeds.

I just read JMS' Forbidden Planet/download tirade over at jmsnews. What an out of touch drama queen. sheesh.

Amen. Internet pirates are fucksticks and criminals. If you enjoy someone's work, you owe them money. Mind you, the above poster is right in the greed displayed by the corps, absolutely. But that doesn't give anyone the right to engage in theft.

Of course. They *made* you steal. There's no such thing as personal responsibility anymore. Perfectly obvious to any rational person. :guffaw:

Why? because of leaks on the net about the script.

http://trekweb.com/articles/2009/03...net-Movie-Early-Draft-Script-Cancelled-.shtml

But when I think to Star Trek XI, large parts of that story were leaked on AICN before anything got moving on that. I don't see why JMS has to get so uptight about it. It happens. It will happen again probably. The people who read it are a small part of those who will be watching it.

I liked the concept they had for this, having it be a sort of Prequel. But now starting from scratch seems like a waste of a good story.

More likely scenario:
--------------------
WB execs actually read it; saw it was utter crap and canned it. But, of course, JMS and his HUGE OVERBLOWN EGO can't admit the real reason because that would be heresy to his Church of Joe faithful.

At this point, I'm amazed studios still let JMS pitch anything. What's next a He Man and the Masters of the Universe revival? (Hey, it's where he got his writing start; and where he first came at odds with a studio because he could accept that Fimation and Mattel were just doing the show to sell the toy line; and weren't really interested in developing the characters.)

This is just stupid. He should be happy he gets any press at all.

Well, neither he nor Harlan Ellison were as even tempered as Mike Hodel.

Wow. Somebody out there actually remembers Mike Hodel's Hour 25? I loved it, tuned in every Friday night (even though I did find JMS to be a bit of a grump). Warren James and Steve Barnes did a great job carrying the show forward after Mike passed away. Good times.

That said, I watched Changeling last weekend and I actually rather liked it, and I didn't expect much going in.

Changeling is an odd movie. The acting is generally good, it looks good, there are a lot of good scenes, but as a whole, it doesn't really have any structure, and it doesn't know what it's building to. You think the story's as resolved as it can get, then a new plot point is introduced, and that has to get resolved, and then another new plot point is introduced, and that has to get resolved, and it keeps happening, over and over, and by the time the movie finishes there have been so many false endings I found myself thinking, what, that's it? This could have been over half an hour ago. Or at least structured in such a way that the end really feels like the payoff for everything that's happened.

As far as Forbidden Planet is concerned... it's a remake. We know the story already. The only reason to be hypervigilant about spoilers is if you're not planning to be faithful to the original. And if you're not, why bother doing a remake in the first place?

You can't play both sides and then whine someone takes advantage in return. Thems the rules. Don't like it. Don't play. JMS knows this, and should deal with it instead of being emo. Not everything he writes is worthy of being paid for, and this coming from someone who bought all the script books. Everyone lays an egg here and there. Little baby should deal with it instead of alienating his fanbase.

I agree with you about downloading. Not right, not cool.

However...

What these people are failing to realize is more than that it's illegal, but it really is destroying the very thing they seem to care about. Have there been any shows that were on the bubble that DVD sales would have saved? Maybe Family Guy and Futurama. Which ones didn't because of illegal downloading? Are there any numbers to support this idea? And does a network, unless they are producing it, rather licensing it, make any money from DVD sales? Wouldn't they make more money from ad revenue?

While I think illegal downloading is...well, it's illegal, I do wonder what the actual impact is.

So you're saying that there's no legitimate uses for recordable media? Nobody'd ever want to back up files or make the legal back-up copy of their legally purchased CDs/DVDs/Programs. Got it. You should have explained that from the beginning.

Internet downloaders are dumbasses but this seems like curing the disease by killing the patent.

Surely if the script was any good they could've done some damage control like Nick Meyer did for STII.

I, for one, am glad they are starting over. I saw the leaked pieces and reviews on IESB - and wasn't impressed. At all.

I think people inside studios actually officially leak shit scripts so that the writers will get pissed off and at least redo parts of it.

The most famous was the terrible idea of Jurassic Park 4 with human trained dinosaurs. That script was real and once it was leaked, and bashed by everyone, the whole thing was thrown out.
