JMS SilverSurfer dead, thanks to FF2 flop

Chris Evans said recently that they've heard nothing from Fox about another film and that he doesn't think it'll happen.
Wasn't that comment like a year ago? Back then, the Surfer movie was allegedly happening.
He made the comment in March of this year. Here are the quotes:

“I’m pretty sure we won’t do [another] one,” insisted “Fantastic Four” star Chris Evans, who excelled in two films as the Human Torch. “I’m assuming that one is a closed book.”

"After the first one was released we got wind of potential titles and plots [almost immediately], and I’ve heard nothing from anyone at Fox [yet],” he grumbled. “We had all planned on doing [another] one but if there were going to be a third I think a week after the second one was released we would have heard.”

Call me biased if you will, but I think the Silver Surfer was the best thing about an otherwise lacklustre FF sequel. If anything, that film needed more cosmic grandeur, more gravitas...more of what the character provided.

the good news is that maybe in 2 or three years they'll reboot it ala the incredible hulk - with a proper cast this time.

Perhaps if FF2 hadn't been a complete juvenile shitfest, the SS movie might have had a chance of being made.

(who the hell is Doug Jones?)
The gold standard in modelling character types like the Surfer (he's also the body of Abe Sapien in the Hellboy films, where David Hyde Pierce does the voice).

Actually, from what I've heard, DHP won't be voicing Abe in HBII:The Golden Army and instead Doug Jones will be providing the voice for Abe as he did in the Animated movies.

*Crosses Fingers.

Keep Evans and Chiklis, recast the others. I like Ioan Gruffudd, but not as Reed Richards.

Rachel McAdams for Sue Storm!

I said it earlier, the Surfer has a great look but he's boring as hell. Too esoteric with his "power cosmic" shit.

You know, Superman isn't really a character people can relate when you think about because he's an alien that's virtually unstoppable. But what about Surfer? He's an alien who can't even blend in with a crowd of humans.

Yeah, the Fantastic Four movie franchise has a way of doing that... every character invariably becomes incredibly lame once they are done with it... Dr Doom, Galactus, the Surfer ;)

I've always seen Silver Surfer as a more introspective character like Dr. Strange or Warlock that would have difficulties translating well on film. I think they would have fantastic sfx possibilities but they would really have to humanize it by keeping it focused on his love for Shalla Bal, his discovery of humanity's worth, and the impending doom of Earth with Galactus's arrival to consume it. Once he's trapped on Earth by that forcefield, I think the stories would drag on like finding a cure for David Banner on the old Hulk tv show.

Yeah, as we get into the more obscure and less straight-forward properties I think they require more vision to bring to the screen. They don't lend themselves to an easy pedestrian summer event movie approach. Of course, even the comics themselves aren't immune to this as new runs often miss the boat with these characters as well.

I know that, but the average person doesn't.

I meant that they could use a more well known actor (and that person's voice) instead of an unknown Fishburne's voice in order for the audiences to relate to him as a person. They may wish to show Norrin Radd before he became a Herald, and/or they may chose to show him using his powers of illusion to look like an average human at some point in a movie (again, for the audience to relate to him as more than just a hunk of shiny stuff).

Silver Surfer has a similar problem to Superman, he's so powerful you need to either put him up against a tremendously powerful enemy (or a very large number of enemies), or have him go through a period of character growth or personal stress in order to show him in conflict (like during his origin story).

Maybe Surfer would see Iron Man flying around, and Sufer being curious would tail Stark and try and find out more about this guy who flies around in a suit? Could be cool.

I like this idea. As long as they get Alexis Denisof as Reed. And bring in a decent director this time.

I haven't seen FF2, but saw the first one on DVD and quite enjoyed it - probably because I had low expectations. I think had it been released 10 years ago, it would have been a lot better received, but coming after the likes of Batman Begins, X-Men 2 and Spider-man, it was just okay. Can't understand why Marvel agreed to one of their prestige names being directed by a mediocre director like Tim Story, while Doc Doom, one of their all time great villains, was watered down and given The Green Goblin's backstory. And I like Julian McMahon, but DD he was not.

Hopefully if they make a 3rd one, they'll learn from the success of Iron Man and Hulk; even if they don't go for a name director, they'll get someone who really cares about the source material and casts the movie right.

No Silver Surfer

While there have been rumors he’s attached to helm THE SILVER SURFER movie, Proyas shoots that down as just that – rumors.

“I was never attached to it,” he says. “These things come up and I don’t know where they come from. I’ve been attached to more movies that I didn’t even know about.”

....

“I’m not doing another I, ROBOT or anything remotely related to 20th Century Fox,” he says. “You can count me out. If it’s got 20th Century Fox on the movie, this guy isn’t doing it. I’m not the only guy who has had a bad experience with them. It’s a bit of a tyranny that goes on there. I’m happy with the movie and proud of I, ROBOT, but the toll it took on me as a creative person to achieve is too much to put myself through again.”

Seems awfully unfair to blame poor SS for the fact that FF has been crippled by wild miscasting from the start. Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis are okay but the rest - gah!

Still it's hard to envision SS ever working well in your average summer blockbuster popcorn fest.

Unless they would do it animated there is no point in doing a Silver Surfer movie. To be honest Surfer is too deep for the average person to understand. Galactus destroys planets but is not evil. The Surfer is good yet bring Galactus to planets to be destroyed. Average person is not going to get that at all. With posters saying he has a board but no water and no penis then you can bet the average person can't understand. To be honest I don't understand why they even put him in the FF movie, especially the way it was done. Very bad idea along with casting Alba as Sue. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

The Incredible Hulk was not very successful. I think it will be a lesson to both Warner/DC and Marvel not to do quickie reboots.
