I am writing my first fanfic which I'm going to do as if it were a movie sequel to Star Trek 2009. There are a few universe assumptions I make:
1. Kirk's Mom is a starfleet commander
2. Pike is not physically on the Enterprise but oversees the Enterprise and 10 other ships from his desk during a two year rehab period.
3. Kirk was given a field promotion to Lt. Cmdr by Pike which was made permanent and promoted to Captain at the end of ST'09. It's as big of a deal in the Trek world as it is in our forums.
4. Starfleet is at the brink of war with the romulans and in general more DS9/Dominion level militant.
5. The Romulan Commander is played by the same actor who plays Sarek in ST'09
6. The direction of exploration by Starfleet is changed by Nero's attack and as such, there can be different Fed members and the explored universe is different.

This story involves a few plot themes:
war and peace

Idealism vs realism
Rank/Experience

I also intend to further change history...

My ST09 Sequel
Captain’s Log, Stardate 2259.75
The Enterprise has completed our fifteen month survey of the Mutara Nebula and is returning to Federation Base 7 for resupply. It has been… very quiet. I spoke at length with Admiral Pike about the mission last week. I was expecting being a captain to somehow be… more exciting. He said… (Kirk hits play)
“Don’t worry son, You will have the chance to be a hero again before your days on the Enterprise are up.”
Our next mission is exciting. We are going to a planet only known as Bajor. One of our listening posts has intercepted a message from them and it’s clear that they are warp capable even if they have not used that capability. Commander Spock and I have grown quite fond of each other. He introduced me to 3D Chess and I even had him at dinner with my mom when we rendezvoused with the USS Intrepid last month. We arrive at the base in 23 minutes… when I find out whether I am the hero or the kid.
Kirk puts on his shirt and heads to the bridge. 4 younger women officers smile and turn as Kirk dutifully walks through the main hall. He walks up to Carol Marcus, one of the scientists assigned to the mission.
“Jim!”
“Dr. Marcus, what did you think of the nebula?”
“It was fascinating, with pulses on wavelengths we’ve never encountered before.”
“Yes, I remember when it knocked out the enterprise’s shields and sensors when we tried to enter it.”
“I also remember, Jim, the days we spent in the shuttlecraft finally getting to the center of the nebula”
Kirk leans over and whispers “I remember those nights too.”
Carol giggles with her hand at her mouth.
“So how about it, you can stay on the Enterprise together after leaving the starbase, as our Science Academy liason. Mr. Spock would love to continue exploring the newest developments in the civilian world and I… would enjoy every minute with you.”
He walks behind her during this offer and wraps his hands around her.
“Jim…”
She pushes his hands off and turns around.
“I can’t. The academy loved the work we did. They loved it so much that they are going to build a new permanent base at Regula just to look at this nebula. I am going back with the construction crew immediately after our arrival. You could ask for a transfer, away from the Enterprise so we could be together out there.”
It wasn’t the rejection that turned Jim the lover into Jim the cold… it was the mention of leaving his beloved Enterprise. The enterprise he had seen from just a dry hulk in riverside to it’s first mission and it’s first major repair. Giving up the Enterprise was not even on the table… short of Carol being pregnant with his first son.
“Thank you but I’m going to head to the bridge now.”
“Captain on the Bridge” announces Lt. Uhura
Spock gets up from the center chair.
“Captain, we will arrive at the starbase in 30 seconds, all departments report ready for dock.”
“Thank you, Mr. Spock.”
“Lt. Uhura, Hail Federation Base 7 and transmit docking codes”

hmmmmmm, most interesting... There was never a mention of *why* the base was at Regula to start with. It was always assumed Project Genesis put it there.
