JJ's ST4/5? my fan theory

How many have you successfully written, and for what projects?

Its not about how successful I am. Though I would argue that it’s the indy creators, developers and producers that move the world forward and come up with new concepts.

But when I can draw up a basic outline of Star Trek IV with an hour, after years of discussions with other fans. And I can even think of how to use whatever sets already built to keep production of the movie on the cheap - and I’m not in the film business whatsoever - I’m right to ask questions. I’ve seen spec scripts before. I know that films have budgets. What’s the controversy?

Besides, my post is based of if Star Trek IV is the only project, which I don’t actually know for sure; there might be other projects in the works the scriptwriter is working on that are responsible for the delay. But if it is the only one, then a first draft should exist that is in the process of being edited before it goes to production.

When you make sweeping assertions about the complexity of a process, timelines and so forth, the onus is on you to be able to support them.

What we've established is that in this instance you're talking through your hat. You don't have the relevant professional experience or information upon which to base sweeping pronouncements about how long it might reasonably take to develop a script for a major commercial film project or what the variables and challenges to be overcome might be with respect to a given project.

It's all just a guess based on how it seems to you that things should probably be. And you go on to use it to support unfounded speculation on what the "real problems" here are.

That dog don't hunt.

Anyone can draw up an outline or write a script. Doesn't mean it's usable, or any good at all - though most of us can find friends and relatives to tell us we're brilliant, they're not investing hundreds of billions of dollars in it.

I never said I didn’t. I just don’t think its relevant to the conversation. And that it would be dismissed out of hand anyways.
