JJ not directing SW Ep8/9

I would only want five seasons at the most, and with a story arc, not that episodic formula bullshit where the ship visits a planet of the week that nobody cares about.

Give J. Michael Straczynski a shot.

A shot of what?

A shot at creating, writing, and producing a five-year Star Trek series run. I know you were joking, but it's worth serious consideration.

Agree with BillJ. I would only want five seasons at the most, and with a story arc, not that episodic formula bullshit where the ship visits a planet of the week that nobody cares about.

YES! Also they should not be afraid to kill major characters, and no bloody A, B, C, D, or E. Just the "Enterprise"!

Well its a different way of looking at Star Trek, but I guess three movies is like having seven seasons on TV ... sort of.

I never said anything like that. I never want to see seven seasons of Star Trek on TV again.
Don't be so sure. The Clone Wars spinoff from Star Wars was ALOT better than I expected it to be (and kinda dark for a kid's TV show, but that's to be expected when Darth Freaking Vader is the protagonist:evil:). You and I both know there's no way they could do a live action Star Wars series and have it not suck, but the animated series was pretty impressive IMO.

A lot has changed since TAS was on the air. The viewer potential for animated series is MUCH bigger than it was in the 70s, especially since the action/adventure series these days are are almost as entertaining to kids as they are to their parents (try watching Transformers Prime. That shit is ADDICTIVE!)

The funny thing is, these animated series are short enough that serialized story arcs are the rule rather than the exception, and CG animation has reached a point where they're dynamic enough to show you things even even their big screen counterparts would find intimidating. Screw the forehead aliens, bring on the Kzinti and the Tholians! How that matter, how about an updated M'Ress and Arex?

Plus... think of the toy sales!:techman:

^^in this vein, how about "Star Trek Kids"?...we could go waaaayyy back to when (pick your crew) was little and how they played together and got to know each other...Biker Riker...Gangsta' Geordi, and how he got out through the power of Reading...O'Brien running the streets of Ireland with his little friends...Troi in the East End...we already know Spock got insulted daily until he stepped up...Kirk stealing primo cars...Crusher playing "Doctor" at an early age...Wesley...um, no...skip...Janeway practicing in front of the mirror in her mom's Star Fleet (just go with it!) uniform, learning to put her hands on her hips "just so"! (I love Janeway, btw!)...Chakotay, sitting...staring...brooding...doing nothing...

...the possibilities would be endless...

:)

I wonder why Abrams is leaving SW after only the first movie. He stayed in Trekland for two - perhaps Disney and he have different ideas about how to progress the series?

I thought the whole point of hiring actors so young is that they could do Star Trek for 10+ years. Why reboot after only three movies?

Agree. No reason to retire this cast, so long as they don't get too expensive (always a risk with an ensemble). Remember that TOS gave us six movies and TNG gave us four. Three movies by Pine/Quinto+ is solid; four or more IMO stands this cast toe to toe with their predecessors in terms of contribution to Trek, rather than the 'extra' or 'add-on' feel they had (again IMO) when 09 came out and to a degree still lingers after ID.

:techman: Babylon 5 was epic despite cheesy (even at the time) CGI. Drama and rich complex characters, often in collaboration one day and competition the next. Truly badass bad guys. The gravy, no timeline bullshit... the past present and future are what they are, and some of the best moments come when characters see what they know they cannot change. Highly recommend.

:guffaw:

After scratching his SW itch, Abrams obviously wants to get back to "Star Trek". :vulcan:

While he won't be directing the next two parts of the trilogy (2017 and 2019), I read somewhere there will be two stand-alone SW movie stories released in 2016 and 2018 (Disney -- doing some saturation bombing of the brand!). If he's free, maybe he'd do one of the stand-alone stories.

I don't think Abrams is the sort who would do a lesser spin-off. He'll have his own projects to do if not the mainline in a franchise.

I'm surprised that this is news. I thought the plan all along was to get a different director for each movie.

Yup, this was always the plan. I think when Abrams was hired to direct VII that everyone just assumed he was taking on the whole trilogy and forgot about it. There has never been anny announcement about him doing the whole trilogy, every official statement has been about VII alone.

I think this is the right way to go for that series. LucasFilm is being very smart on this by bringing in new directors for the following films to keep the series fresh. Also, this is very much similar to how the original trilogy handled things with Lucas hiring other directors to tell his stories. When he was planning the prequels, the original plan was that he would direct THE PHANTOM MENACE and that other directors would come in and do the last two. For whatever reason, he ditched that idea and decided to direct all three himself.

He wasn't going to do it at all, initially, and then allowed himself to be talked into directing VII. As far as I know, he was never contracted to do more than the one. The Trek contracts, on the other hand, were for a three-movie producer deal.

I thought he wasn't too crazy about working in England and being gone from his family for such a long time? May have had a big influence on him only doing one film.

Which is kind of how it happened with the Trek films, not wanting to direct them but each time the writers and producers encouraged him, that he was the guy to get it done.

This. As much as I'd like to see a JJ Abrams Star Wars trilogy, Disney wants a movie every year, with a trilogy movie in there every other year like clock work.

If I had to guess, it's because Abrams showed with Star Trek '09 that he's a really, really good table-setter, in terms of establishing the look, feel and personality of a universe. This new trilogy is going to be, what, 30+ years, storyline-wise, after the original trilogy, so I'm sure Lucasfilm / Disney wanted someone who had proven himself able to not only direct a good sci-fi film, but also to get the wheels turning for future installments. Rian Johnson's done some great stuff, but I'm not sure he's the guy you want giving you your first impression of this "new" Star Wars.

The other thing is that Abrams likes to only commit to one project at a time. He didn't commit to Star Trek Into Darkness until he had wrapped post on Super 8 (and because Paramount didn't want to wait on two franchises for him, Bad Robot put Brad Bird on Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol), and I'm sure he didn't want to be doing all Star Wars all the time for the next six years or whatever.

Doesn't it seem like he'd do a kind of darker Star Wars? Might have been good for Ep III.

I think JJ is going to be perfect for Star Wars. Not sure about Johnson though.

I've only seen his stuff on BREAKING BAD, and if he could emotionally punch me in the same way he did in that show with STAR WARS, I'll be utterly happy.
