I didn't like what he made with the Star Trek adaption but I am hopeful for the Star Wars continuation, mostly because it's just that, a continuation and not an adaption of an old source that is no longer being made. Well, except for Star Trek Continues.

This shot breaks the fourth wall and takes me right out of the film each time I see it. It's like you're looking at a completely artificial construct and not a real spaceship sweeping in out of a distant sun to save the day.

What about slow-motion effects? Or background music? Or English-language subtitles when Klingon is being spoken?

Exactly. Heck, every time you recognize a familiar actor you're being reminded that that you're watching theatrical production, but you just suspend disbelief and go with it, cause that's how movies work.
The first time I saw the original STAR WARS I was not knocked out of the story by the fact that Moff Tarkin looked suspiciously like Doctor Van Helsing. I just thought "Wow. Peter Cushing is in fine form here" and kept watching the movie.
Didn't ruin my ability to get caught up in the narrative at all.
