I like both, but for different reasons. The Prime Universe is comfortable for me, with a rich history and a progression of ideas, technology and settings. The New Universe is entertaining as hell. Both have logic flaws and continuity issues if you choose to focus on that aspect.
When I watch one of the new movies I set aside the classic mentally and just lose myself in that world. I don't agree with all the choices made, but then again I have yet to see a movie that I do.

I feel this is an unfair comparison. The Prime timeline contains three years of TOS, seven years of TNG, seven years of DS9, seven years of VOY, four years of ENT, and ten feature films. Compare that to nuTrek, which has about 6 hours of total screen time (not counting STB, which will bump that number up to a whopping 8 1/2 hours.)

How does one compare the two? Perhaps if nuTrek had 50 years of screen time as well, we could reasonably say that one was better than the other. But we don't. For all we know, someone could base a new show on the nuUniverse and it could be just as awesome and wonderful as some people think the TOS universe is.

Reimagining, reinventing the space opera shouldn't be so hard. So many people write space opera books based on their own universes. Star Trek shouldn't be so different. The time line shouldn't even be an issue if it's totally original. Then why call it Star Trek? I know, I know. Why not call it forbidden Planet since they got there before Trek did. All it takes is one man with a vision. Star Dates are nebulous anyway. They don't reveal a timeline. The story is the thing and the concept is king. I suggest an overarching series long arc like the Klingons want something that only Humans can get for them - Maybe the Ketracil white for instance and include the Dominion in the mix. Somewhere in the middle of all the spin offs is an original series. It's just a matter of finding it and making it as least expensive as possible which is why a metaphysical answer is best suited for a new series. Maybe a Vulcan Hallucination.

Essentially this for myself as well. Both universes have their merits, and both have holes in them so large you could drive a starship through them, but the end result should be whether or not you were entertained. For me, I was. I love the new characterizations, the new technologies, the new look and feel, and I can't wait for more.

I watch the new films when I want to be on the bleeding edge of something exciting and new. I watch the prime universe Trek for when I want some comfort food. To me, there's no reason why they can't complement one another.

3. A reboot. In which case it might not matter which century it is. Or,
If there should be a reboot-into yet another timeline-the century could be rendered obscure by use of the stardate

It occurred to me that the invention of warp drive would be a crucial turning point/historical event in peoples' minds. The (Trek) present would be regarded as modern. Pre-warp would be considered to be ancient history.

So...make references to pre-warp history a rarity. And definitely avoid mention of the early 21st century.

It's got to hinge on a mystery concept that can't be solved. A tv show concept within a tv show concept. 2001 had it with the monolith. Babylon V had it with the shadows, etc..

This might be consistent with a new Trek show having an X-Files or Twilight Zone vibe.

Sure. You could keep references to anything in the likely lifetime of people alive in 2015 to a minimum. Indeed someone born in 2015 will only be 48 for Cochranes warp flight. That's starting to seem a little too optimistic.

A reboot Trek could pick a much later date, and set the action a little farther in the future.

The beauty of full reboot is that you can do whatever you want. Alot more wide open.

A reboot could be a re-interpretation or re-imaging. Something along the lines of the different Robin Hood movies.

I imagine Zefram Cochrane and his technological revolution appearing much later.

In the meantime, I can see a period-after the early 21st century, but pre-Trek...which includes developments such as the Eugenics War.

Yes, and something that shows how the characters who were essential to the development of Earth's technological and social evolution in the period following Cochran's flight, survived and were catalyzed by the catastrophe of WW III.

When I think of intelligent androids and Warp Drive, I think Star Trek gets it exactly wrong. I would sooner believe we will have an android like Data in 2063 and Warp speed in 2364, than the other way around.

This is an example of the benefits of rebooting. You can consider issues like this.

... you can set in Narnia for all I care.

Now all I can picture is Kirk trying to take Aslan down a peg.

Kirk: "We don't need an allegorical lion anymore. The human race can stand on its own two feet now."

Spock (scanning): "Fascinating, Captain. Sensors indicate that this not actually a feline life-form at all, but rather a sophisticated artificial intelligence posing as a semi-divine entity."

McCoy: "Damnit, Jim! I'm a doctor, not a lion tamer!"

To be honest, I voted original series, but I wouldn't have minded a JJ series reboot if they hadn't changed the dynamic of the characters.
It would be really cool if they combined the JJ universe and created a series of kinda like... A modern day idea of star trek. Completely updated communications tech, sleeker weapons, ships, outfits and plots based on modern day theories and future predictions and the classic dynamic.

That's the ideal for me, but I know it won't happen. :) One can dream.
