JJ Abrams on the direction of Star Trek 11

Cary L. Brown;1564422 But I'm also prepared to give Abrams a bit of trust... just not BLIND trust. I intend to verify.[/quote said:
I don't understand. It's already finished filming.

When people have been lied to enough or seen enough promises broken then it's understandable they're skeptical.

I make no apologies for this. TPTB have done so much wrong that my every instinct tells me they're likely to put out just more crap.

And the fact that this is a completely different set of creative people from what we've had for the last 20 years is irrelevant?

I am a Trekkie and a Star Wars fan but what I am leary about this movie is why use characters from the TOS why? I know those are the characters that are known in the mainstream but how are you going to move forward if going going back create your own characters JJ

I think you just answered your question yourself: Because they are "the characters that are known in the mainstream".

No complaints here. Sounds good, if he can pull it off.
So the rumors about Spock's gay relationship are false ?

It's always great when people are so overly sensitive that they read other people's posts and read only what they want to read in order to find reasons to take offense rather than read what the other person actually said.

There are people working in political campaigns who get paid to do that.

^^ Yes. Until I know different it's just more of the Hollywood spin machine.

Alrighty. But there are no "TPTB" working on this film that have "lied to us" and "broken promises" in regards to Star Trek. So I still say your original line of reasoning is rather flawed.

^^ They're all the same pack of con artists with rare exception.

And it's time for me to bow out on this thread. I'm now just repeating myself. You all will not convince me of how supposedly misguided I am.

I just don't trust them to get it right. And everything I've seen so far is pointing in that very direction.

I recall when Tom Cruise proclaimed "I'm a huge fan of mission: Impossible and I can't wait to get this project going. Yeesh! For a "huge" fan then why didn't he do Mission Impossible? Instead he did some hyper action flick and made the former lead character a double agent. No wonder Peter Graves turned down the role.

This just sounds more of the same thing.

It's one thing to dislike someone's output based on a limited sample, but it's an entirely different thing to assume that he's a liar and a con artist bent on deceiving Star Trek fans everywhere. That's both unreasonable and unnecessary.

That kind of statement, which you can find wherever these discussions take place, doesn't have anything to do with the facts; it's projected anger and anxiety.

Well, I for one am glad thar Abrams brought up Star Wars as an inspiration because whether you like the Star Wars movies or not, they are MOVIES. In the same sense that the Godfather was a MOVIE or Citizen Kane was a MOVIE or Gone With The Wind was a MOVIE. They were made by someone who understood the language of cinema and how to take the mundane and make it extraordinary on the big screen. TPM (and to a much much much lesser extent, the rest of the TOS films) was the only film that got close to that MOVIE vibe. The TNG films, as pointed out here many times, were two part episodes storywise, stylistacally, and in execution. For Abrams to use Star Wars as a point of reference can only be a good thing. Besides, he could do worse. In some parallel universe he's probably saying "You know? I really think Gigli was an underrated masterpiece and I think it's style could work for Star Trek,". Think about it.

Many posters here seem to have already convinced themselves that that's what he's done. :p

I don't mind change in Star Trek. I've watched all the series and movies, countless times. Maybe I miss understood the passage -- I thought since Abrams was a fan of Star Wars, that he was going to make this film more like Star Wars which is what I don't want. But if all his intentions are to just make the film different from what we've seen, then fine, I'm for it. Just keep Star Wars out of Trek is all I ask :)
"Use the Force, Jim!" :guffaw:
"I'll always be with you." Was that Obi Wan Kenobi or Spock? Oh yeah, it was both! :guffaw:
I think ST and SW fans have more in common than we often care to admit. ST fans who love TOS movies & hate TNG movies... SW fans who love Luke Skywalker movies (4,5,6) & hate Anakin Skywalker movies (1,2,3). Even some who may feel vice versa.
Futurama was partial to Star Trek, Family Guy was partial to Star Wars... both used parts of the other though.
All in all, I'm positive about this movie. I want it to succeed, not suck. I believe and hope that it will inspire more movies, perhaps even new series that will succeed, not suck.

Family guy has tons of Star Trek, It's creator and main vocalist was even on ENT.

And more on topic, it's funny how people dis Abrams for saying he liked Star Wars more in this thread, and dis Orci in another for saying he likes Trek more.
