JJ Abrams and his brand of storytelling

Let's speculate as to what that mystery is that won't be resolved in his Trek. In MI:III, it was the McGuffin. What will it be in Star Trek ('09)?

At the film's end, Prime Spock will return to the 24th century and will be sitting in his house alone contemplating the ramifications of the timeline changes that have occured. There will be a knock on his door. Puzzled, he will get up and slowly open the door. He raises his eyebrow. Fade to black.

Okay that kind of unsloved mystery I might be able to live with.

All I ask from this movie and I suppose from Mr. Abrams is a straight-forward story with good pacing, good plotting, good characterization.

That's it.

This is an attempt to reboot. Do a good job and then you can get a bit crazier in the next one.

Ultimately the story doesn't matter as long as the characters remain true and we enjoy spending time with them. Sometimes plots can get unnecessarily convoluted at the expense of the emotional payoffs that character interaction can bring.

What's important about a MacGuffin is that what it is isn't important.

IOW, whether it's a mystery box or a statuette of a black bird, its importance is that its existence motivates the behavior of the characters - not what it actually is or can do.

Eeeexactly.
