Inspired to make this after watching Star Trek 2009. Thought it would be fun to do with the TOS Enterprise.

Is it me or does it look bigger than on TOS? It looks great by the way.

Nice job! For some weird reason the 09 Enterprise really bothers me in still shots (it looks lopsided and the center of gravity is off -- I always feel like it's about to tip over), but it doesn't really bug me when I see it in motion on the screen.

Very Nice. Better then the "retro" 50's nacelled, sloppy hull, with the TMP saucer we got stuck with. Oh well. C'est la vie, eh?

Until someone CGI's the Real Enterprise into the movie!

PixelMagic, that's gorgeous!

Absolutely beautiful. Just makes me all the sadder we didn't see her on the big screen.

Yeah I gotta admit, it would have been a lot of fun to see the old ship on-screen again. They'd have needed to remove the script references to it being a brand new, top-of-the-line starship, but that wouldn't have been terribly difficult or detrimental to the film. ("Be careful with her, Spock, she's an antique.")

Actually, that might have tied in nicely with Kirk driving the antique car at the beginning of the film.

That's a great image, and really nicely lit.

That said, in a shot like this the old ship just doesn't have that "ohmigod" umph that the reveal of the new version managed. Maybe something like the TMP ship might, depending on how it was photographed.

It would have been newer than almost any time we'd seen her befrore. It looks great. A few minor detailing tweaks and it would have looked just fine.

I like it, but something seems a hair off...

I wonder how that shot would look with Vektor's Enterprise or the TOS.5 Enterprise. Of course, if you're going to do that, ask permission first.

That might help. The major reason that the TOS ship would not work - wouldn't inspire any excitement or awe in anyone watching the movie who didn't already have strong positive feelings about it - is that it's too simple and plain a model. ST:TMP addressed that, and so do some of the more detailed variations that CG artists have done.

Well, the TOS ship is already an icon, so you can't exactly surprise an audience by showing them what they saw in the 1960s.

Part of what is "off" with the image is perhaps that the nacelles appear to be just a little weathered, which would not make sense if the ship were "brand new." Without the weathering, I suppose, you have the challenge of creating versimilitude and scale working with a smooth white shape without design detail.

The TOS.5 Enterprise, however, still looks very much like the Enterprise. It seems to do justice to the form of the original ship while adding some detail. From what I've seen that ship would have held up well on screen.

If someone actually built a 1:1 model of the TOS ship and put into Earth orbit, I cannot imagine the sight of it from the space shuttle or ISS would not be awe inspiring. With enough realism, I think the original design would still wow an audience.

The only aspect of the original design that seems "too simple" to me is that of the connecting struts between the secondary hull and the nacelles. They always looked a bit too much like popsickle sticks to me. And yet, part of the enduring beauty of the TOS design is its simplicity.
