Jessica Watson - 16 Yr Old Sails Solo Around The World

I thought there would have been a thread about this by now. Seeing as not...

Jessica Watson has completed her journey around the world, a few days before her 17th birthday. My kids are older than her, but I find her very admirable. She took on an incredibly tough challenge, did it with energy and no complaint, and since returning has behaved with grace and decorum. Our Prime Minister said she was "Australia's newest hero". She said she had to disagree with him.

"I don't consider myself a hero, I'm an ordinary girl. You don't have to be someone special to achieve something amazing, you've just got to have a dream, believe in it and work hard. I'd like to think I've proved that anything really is possible if you set your mind to it."
For that simple quote (which I'm thinking of using as a sig) and her modest attitude I really do admire her.

Right now I'm in the midst of a really intense college course, basically packing two semesters of work in one (to clarify, I'm updating from an (old) Associate Diploma to a full Diploma, but to do so I had to take the bulk of subjects in the course before the Diploma (Cert IV), as my old AssDip only carried some prior learning recognition). The workload that I'm doing from Feb to June this year, from next year, will be equivalent to a year and a half (they realised they've compressed the subjects too much). It's hard, I'm old, concentration and memory aren't what they were.

But I now say, "If a 16 year old can sail solo around the world, then I can do this."

Yep, she is an inspiration. :) She's going to make a bucket of money out of it, but good luck to her.

She really is an inspiration. I found her journey fascinating for two reasons:

1) The absolute freedom of doing what she did, how wonderful that had to feel.
2) That her mom let her go do this! When I was 16 I couldn't ride my bike across the street!

I hope she has great success in this. She has shown initiative, courage and determination of spirit, and I think it will serve her well. What a smart and well rounded young woman.

She may be modest about her accomplishment, but I think what this girl has done is amazing. Sailing singlehanded around the world is no small feat for an adult, let alone a sixteen-year-old girl. Hell, when I was her age, I was building model spaceships and masturbating a lot.

Oh, and she's also pretty cute.

I think it took an incredible amount of courage on her part, especially at her age. Now she'll have something to show for in school.

As soon as I saw the title to this thread my thought was "is she hot?"

Sue me.

Hmm, teeth are a bit weird, but not terrible

Oh, I'm sure that was the first thought running through the minds of half the guys reading this thread. Shoot, I was wondering whether or not she was good-looking. And I'm old enough to be her father -- in fact, I could almost be her grandpa.

So just call me a dirty old man.
