They could have added Seven and kept both Kes and Harry Kim.

I agree that a Kes-Seven friendship would have been interesting.

But I disagree about Chakotay being dumped. I wouldn't have liked if my second favorite after Kes would have been kicked out.

    Why not!
That could have been a very interesting relationship if the Janeway/Chakotay relationship was out of question.
Honestly, it was more Chemistry between Chakotay and Kes than Chakotay and Seven. Both are spiritual people.

He did ask the producers to write him off but they refused.

For once I agree with the producers. It would have been a pity if Chakotay had been killed off.

There's a problem with firing minorities?

If Chakotay died, B'Elanna would become XO, even though Tom Outranks her, and they are both Maquis. SOMETHING ABOUT SEXISM.

My understanding is that TPTB were going to replace a character; the only question was which one. Assuming that's the case, saying they could have kept both is ducking the question.

They were going to get rid of kim.

Wang couldn't remember his lines, and showed up to work without sleeping reeking of booze (but not drunk) with glitter stained floozies in tow, so they penalized him by kicking him out of a couple episodes as punishment. Bloodfever was one of the ones he missed out on.

    On his way out.

They hired Jeri before they fired Wang.

People magazine made Wang one of the sexiest people in the world on a poll.

Sexier than Brad Pit and Xena Warrior princess.

The Network said "keep him" which superseded the producers needs to cut off the dead weight.

Lien was next in line to go, or they couldn't afford Jeri.

    Finite money

In that case, I will give you a more straight answer from my point of view..

Option 1: No changes in the cast. It was good as it was.

Option 2: Kim had to go.

Each to their own. I detest the character and always have, and would have been quite okay with that particular bit of dead wood being cut free from the series. But that's neither here nor there; it didn't happen, after all. Unfortunately.

To keep the OT thing going for a bit longer (and thus annoy @Akiraprise :D), and given it's probably been a decade or so since I've mentioned it here, I'm very much a Seven fan and on the whole I enjoyed the hell out of what the character brought to Voyager. I dislike(d) the lazy writing that led to the absurd "Borg nanoprobes can do anything!!!!" crap that became a rather obnoxious trope, but the character herself was brilliant. The fact she was portrayed by a stellar actress helped a great deal; the mind boggles at what Seven would have been like if played by a lesser performer than Jeri Ryan.

(Yesterday's episode of Picard reminded me all over again how good Seven / Ryan is. Very much looking forward to more.)

But Starfleet doesn't have money so any actor playing a Starfleet character should go method and do it for free.

I haven't posted a response here, to any comment in several years, since pressing circumstances made my continued presence, logistically impossible (if anyone has the slightest interest, I can explain on PM, though I doubt such would evince much concern at all). I have dropped in a few comments regarding Ms. Lien's latest unfortunate run-in with the law, though I've been derelict in ascertaining how the most recent proceeding, about a week ago, may have concluded, whether with yet, another rescheduled appearance, or not. I will attempt to remember to follow-up on that later today. Unfortunately, Smith County seems to be one in a generally tighter financial state than most of the others in Tennessee, as they haven't been able to make the systemic IT provision to be included on the state judicial site, that allows one to view the disposition of cases in any type of court, by simply choosing the county and making a few more keystrokes. Smith County is simply not on the roster to choose from.‍♂️‍♂️‍♂️

So, one has to connect with the County Clerk directly to procure that same information. In any case, it would probably fall only to you, Guy, to prompt such an interactive return, for which I thank you, in this instance. The reason is that you've so accurately and concisely set out the conditions for Ms.Lien's departure from Voyager. Many, many here are aware of it, but it's a boon you've provided (though I would hardly be surprised if you don't view it that way) to members new to the forum or those that have been exposed to faulty (sometimes intentionally, with malice aforethought) speculations about her alleged experiences in Hollywood or earlier on in her life. I suppose it's just as easy to work backwards, assuming what occurred over 20 years ago, can be intuited from a police blotter that's been significantly filled, since 2012. While it's clear that alcohol/drugs have amplified Ms. Lien's tragic path, it's important to be consistent in repeating that, in no way, does that factor represent the genesis and absolute core of her life's decline, that being major psychological problems of some stripe, that were evident early on, certainly to anyone that could distinguish the actual reason for her marked reticence, from the very first of her convention appearances. She already suffered from a severe social anxiety disorder, pretty copiously noted by her castmates, from other scenarios, as well. How that reality germinated, by degrees, into a major illness, is beyond my ken to confidently assert, though I'm aware of one very significant factor, that was at play.

But, that's a whole other story, for which hypothesis or the most educated guesswork, aren't appropriate means to responsibly utilize. During the course of the couple of stints during which I was active here, I never saw comments from a member suggesting the sort of close knowledge, that would allow for an authoritative recounting of the situation, as it developed over the years. There's no real reason to suspect that anyone here is in the pretty rarefied position to be able to attest to such information, just as is the case for the vast majority of performers who have appreciably appeared in the ST canon. Certainly, there are a few members who have had occasion to meaningfully encounter some such actor, more than a time or two, but even in whatever conditions that may have taken place, it doesn't imply any sort of genuine apprehension of their private history or antecedents for behavior, that's not so readily apparent. We are, with very limited exceptions, fans, or perhaps a bit more kindly, connoisseurs of the franchise, after all, with no real connection to its players.

From what I can make out Jennifer had a court date last week........@Drone is trying to find out how it played out but Smith County TN isn't on PACER or any other electronic system that the rest of the world uses now to post court data. I think that's the jist...........maybe.

I regret, apparently being far more voluminous and/or oblique in my remarks than was necessary. I needn't have even addressed my absence, as if I were a prodigal son returning, or even a member that would be in anyone's recollection, at all. Yes, KennyB, the gist of the comments can be so summarized, but I was genuinely grateful to Guy for concisely delineating Jennifer Lien's departure from the show as he did. In that same feeling, I felt moved to speak about her situation since, to a degree of how I know it, which may well have been poorly chosen to do, or kind of jarring to deal with, at this time of the morning (ET time anyway).

    Again, sorry for the overindulgence.

I think the general conversation process of the global society could do with an increased verbosity in the written communication in the general situation, however in this case there could be a tendency for the extended loquaciousness to dilute the conveyance of the principal erudition and obscure the essense of the communique.

I don't really have a dog in this fight over who should/shouldn't have been fired, but speaking as an impartial observer - is Garrett Wang really all that beautiful/sexy?

I think he's aged well, with considerably less change in his appearance, from pretty much anyone else in the cast. Of course, other than Lien, he was far younger than the others. In fact, I was a bit startled at how Manu Intiraymi looks today, having seen him in a recent podcast, and comparing that with his visage at a convention a bit less than five years ago, when I would have still characterized him as youthful, both in his physical appearance and in how he expressed himself. It seems he's gone through some hard times since then.

In any event, while I would never have described Wang as beautiful (sexy quotient being outside my parameters), he has appeared in a few features since Voyager, and I think if he were of a mind to, could very reasonably pursue other acting opportunities. As far as I'm aware, though, he has pretty much, long since, settled into the MC role at a variety of conventions (far from limited to ST), which I think is a great niche for his talents and he genuinely appears to have a kick doing. Also, given how steady the work is (well, was) and the level of events he was involved in (perhaps in production too?), I have to think that Wang's been doing very well financially, for some time, which wouldn't be nearly as assured if he had been determined to continue in acting only.

I give you full marks for constructing a cogent and smart simulacrum of how you perceived I decided to word my comments. I have expressed an apology, which honestly, I might not have done, if a moderator hadn't felt the need to step in and translate, for the one damn member who happened to have been around at the time, to notice.

It's a disappointing to see, after this absence of years, that a yes, somewhat lengthy set of remarks, but one justified in that dimension, by virtue of speaking to 3 separate issues, and not employing college level vocabulary (I've looked it over several times), apparently becomes the object of mockery and derision. Hell, before I departed here, for terra incognita, I often made entries of twice the length, without getting called out for my style, at least, if I didn't venture over to Trek Tech, or the non-Trek science sub-forum, where I could count on being hassled by a few nasty pieces of work.

So, in the interval since I last appeared with a direct response, has there been a swell of condemnatory opinion that marks elaboration as a gladly viewed example of a bygone world (as you purported to bemoan in your first sentence)? Have moderators set word limits on comments? I'm not going to scan various threads for acclimation of such a proposition, but having missed out on Discovery and Picard making their presence felt, such limitations would seem hard to credit (I won't venture my place on that divide, not knowing how they may be generally viewed by a majority of the esteemed members).

It doesn't really matter, as my popping up here, definitely doesn't augur a return, save in the rather limited example I mentioned in my reply to Guy. As I said though, it's genuinely discouraging to have a post that shouldn't require any degrees to readily understand, get cavalierly slagged off as the product of a superannuated egghead, especially, given the clearly superior rank of intellect that I know still resides here, just in the recognition of half a dozen names, or more, that were prime contributors back when I was around. Good day.
