Jeff Goldblum leaves L&O: Criminal Intent; show's future questionable

Re: Jeff Goldblum leaves L&O: Criminal Intent; show's future questiona

I'm a Goldblum fan, as well as a Burrows fan....but this Criminal Intent season just didn't have any episodes that 'stood out' or were interesting.

I left after the first or second show...

Btw, Goldblum is in a romantic comedy that is soon to be released...(I forget the name)...

Re: Jeff Goldblum leaves L&O: Criminal Intent; show's future questiona

Most of the cast leavings were done because they wanted to leave. A few had new borns or were expecting children or just wanted more family time. I never heard anything about USA firing them because they wanted something different in the show.

Well, if you have a source for that assertion, I'd be glad to see a link to it. The only information I could find was what I linked to.

I think SVU and CI had the same problem; the stars have defined their show.

All most people know about SVU is Meloni and Hargitay, just as CI was a show about D'Onofrio.

Hm. On most shows, that wouldn't be considered a problem.

On most shows. Law and Order relies on the story, not the characters from week to week. That format does not bode well when actors become bigger than the show.

^Well, the original L&O relied on the story rather than the characters. It doesn't follow that it's wrong for the spinoffs to have different priorities. If they weren't going to be different, why do them at all?

Criminal Intent was meant from the start to be in the spirit of classic drawing-room mysteries and open mysteries like Columbo -- all of which were very much driven by the characters of the star detective and the people he or she pursued. So it wasn't an accident that it became character-driven; that was the idea all along.

As I understand it, SVU in particular was pitched as a different show entirely and only gained the L&O title as a ratings booster.

Wolf generally fired people when they got too big: Noth, Bratt, etc.

I think the other reason that SVU has survived this long is that they know that ratings would take a nosedive if Meloni & Hargitay left.

Just look at how abysmal the ratings dropped for CI on cable after the most noticeable stars left.

Bratt wasn't fired; he quit, thinking his movie career was going to take off.

Showing my age... my thought was "the McLean Stevenson move." Or the Michelle Forbes move, or... there's a pretty long list.
