Jedi Camp

If this is the wrong forum, my appologies. I'm going to be teaching at a camp this summer, for kids grades 3 -5. The program I'll be doing for about 1 and a half hours a day is called Jedi Training. Obviously it will be based on Star Wars, and must be age appropriate for elementary school children.

I'm wondering what hands on type projects and activities some of you may suggest. Remember, money is a real factor, as well as available supplies. Think things that are easily available at places like Michael's or a school supply room.

Thanks, and may the Force be with you.

Here are some suggestions. They are from young Jedi Training at Star Wars Weekends:

Jedi Training Academy – Each young “Obi-wanna-be” who is chosen will learn a lightsaber combination as they prepare to face the dark side!

Padawan Mind Challenge – Kids under 12 can test their wits before the Jedi Council!

STar Wars trivia game show

First, don't let any girls in - well, one or two, maybe, but don't let them talk!

Now, as for activities...

- Meditation
- Cardio/weight training/gymnastics
- Vegan snacks
- Akido
- Anger management/conflict resolution
- Mandarin (most common Earth language outside of English/"Basic")
- Arabic (language of our greatest cultural rivals)
- History and geography lessons
- Giving all your toys away to poor kids
- Gardening
- Volunteering at homeless shelters/soup kitchens

Hey, this is fun! :p

Uh, thanks guys, I think.

I do like the Star Wars trivia contest idea, and mind challenge, Flying Speghetti Monster.

You got some sarcastic replies, aye, but a bit more info up front may have been helpful. As in: why a "Jedi training" activity, exactly? Was it your idea, and if so, did you come up with it so you and the kids could have geeky fun, or were you thinking it could be at all educational, or...?

If you were up for making it education, it could be fun to show bits and pieces of movies that inspired SW (WW2 dogfights, pulp space fantasy), and explain (on an appropriate age level, of course) where some of the mythical archetypes came from. You could also have fun talking about the business of the franchise, and how certain elements have been amplified in response to fans' tastes (the Fetts) and certain things pretty much forgotten (the Ewok TV movies, etc.). You could show them fan films, and discuss concepts relating to copyright law.

Or, if you merely wanted to geek out, you could watch the movies and do trivia contests. Your choice. ;)

I wanted to keep it more fun than educational. The parents are paying for a day camp, so I don't want it to be sitting and watching something they can see at home on DVD.
Truthfully, the camp has lots of creative type classes, and I really needed the summer job since they like to cut teacher salaries, so I came up with a Star Wars idea. They already had Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, Dungeons and Dragons, and so on.
And the sarcastic replies gave me a smile, too, so no worries.
