I'm very curious - what's the overall opinion of the first sequel in the Jaws series?

I happened to catch the first movie on TV late last night and got to thinking of the series. In all the years I have viewed the films, I have to say I quite like the second film. Is it as good as the first? Not at all, but it's the best Jaws sequel, in my opinion.

It had its moments. The helicopter attack might have been a bit outrageous, but the sequence when Mike's two pals are trying desperately to get him into their boat just before the shark nearly swallows him whole.

I also like that the film didn't borrow too much from its predecessor in that the shark is shown A LOT. The shark served more as a presence in the first movie just before it's finally revealed near the end.

The rest of the movies are utter trash - Jaws 3(D) has to be one of the worst movies I have ever seen, but oddly enough, I prefer Jaws: The Revenge over the third. The Revenge, to me, at least has some watchable value even if its just for it's sheer camp.

Jaws 2. Like it? Hate it?

I like it. Obviously, it's not as good as the first one, but it's not far off. It definitely delivers as a sequel, and doesn't stray into the utter idiocy of 3 & 4.

As far as I'm concerned, there are only 2 Jaws films.

My older brother took me to see it when it first came out (I was about 9 or 10). I was holding my drink between my legs and jumped during the one scene where the diver encountered the shark underwater and bit through the mouthpiece. I spilled cola all over my lap and the whole film had me on edge.

These many years later I still think it is a worthy sequel to the original. After that, it all went to shit.

I liked Jaws 2 - for a sequel that could never possibly match up to its predecessor I thought it was as good as it could be. Also a great demise for the shark no matter how unrealistic it was.

Jaws 3 had potential but my father in law's best friend worked on the movie and said the director was drunk for the entire shoot, so it was doomed from the get go apparently.

Jaws 2 is somewhat attributable to a slasher film, I think. The filmmakers worked with what they had and did a great job - especially for it being a sequel. I feel that it does stand apart from its predecessor quite a bit.

Whenever I watch the movie, I never really get the feeling, "I've been through this already." Even though the film's plot is exactly the same as the original, the fact that they were able to deliver some new and exciting sequences made me see beyond that. Hell, if the movie doesn't have my attention during the scene when Brody discovers the charred body of the water skier, I jump almost every time.

Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss's absence hurt the film a bit, but Scheider carries the movie brilliantly. I like that Brody became nearly obsessed with the shark - so much that it costs him his job. Some great character development, which is a rare thing for a sequel, in my opinion.

Interesting fact: During the release of Jaws: The Revenge, Universal Studios were referring to it as the "third" film in the terrifying "Jaws Trilogy." Apparently, the studio didn't even want to acknowledge the third movie existed. Even the fourth film carries on as if the third never happened.

^^ Sort of, but I always assumed that, despite having different actors, the Mike (and whatever his wife's name was) were in the same vein as their characters in the 3rd movie.. Weren't they both Marine Biologists in the 3rd (and 3D) movie?

I distinctly remember seeing the Jaws 3D at a theatre in Las Vegas while visiting there with a childhood friend. Our parents had hit the casinos and dropped us off at the theatre.. UGH.. Even at such a young age, I knew I was seeing a stinker..

Its ok as a sequil the ending is the same as the first in terms of he kills the shark in a dramatic fashion and has a one liner to go with it.

I thought this was probably the most realistic way to kill the shark aside from what happened in the 3rd movie (which I liked for the humor of it).

Roy Schieder originally wasn't going to be in the film. He was cast in the Robert DeNiro role in Deer Hunter but a couple of weeks in, he suddenly had a change of mind about the characters motivation and wanted out. The studio was not happy and the only way they allowed him to get out of his contract was to do the Jaws sequel.

Actually, no. Mike was an engineer working on the SeaWorld park in the third movie. He suddenly became a marine research scientist in Jaws 4. The girlfriend he had in third one was a marine biologist, but she was never referenced in the fourth one, and Mike was married to someone else.

Not to mention his brother Sean in the third movie is a chubby, bumbling idiot who shows up in a cowboy hat. By the fourth movie, he's a police deputy.

Could he have been a cop in the third movie and we just didn't know? Maybe, but I doubt it.

Jaws 3 was one of my all time favorite movies as a kid! It took place at Sea World!!! It was two great things mixed up in one! I'm sure if I saw it today I probably wouldn't enjoy it as much
