Jar Jar Binks Actor Considered Suicide After 'Star Wars' Backlash

Death threats over a fictional character in a kids' movie. If that's not indicative of some serious mental health issues, I don't know what is.

The lack of insight so many are showing over this shit is incredible, they are cheering these people on as though they are heroes. It genuinely makes me wonder how far humanity's actually come.

I've often felt bad for Ahmed Best, who probably thought he was on the verge of a major break in his career before Phantom Menace came out not to mention he probably considered being in a Star Wars movie a childhood dream come true, as IIRC he was a fan growing up. And then, only to end up having his character be one of the most reviled pop culture characters through no fault of his own. I knew it was never easy for him, but I never realized he got to the point of contemplating suicide over it. Hell, his Robot Chicken appearances implied he had a relatively good sense of humour about Jar Jar. But then I guess humour is often the best disguise for pain.

Still, it's good his life is turned around now, and he's got a good family life at least. That's not nothing.

He also played Jar Jar in 7 episodes of the Clone Wars TV series, and that unaired Detours TV show.

Unfortunately, it's not limited to Star Wars. Meyer got similar threats over leaks about Spock dying.

Best did what he could with the material given. Lucas wrote the character and, to be honest, visionary though he is, he is not an actor's director.
Despite the hatred towards the character, he was ground breaking. The work Best did with the character helped towards the creation of Gollum and Caesar. Without Jar Jar, it may have been years before these characters could have been viable. Looked who fantastic they were/are. It's just sad that Best will be remembered for Jar Jar being such a bad character.

Ahmed did a great interview about the Jar Jar role, the backlash and the pioneering technology George Lucas used (which would be used in LOTR, John Carter, new Planet of the Apes films, and Avatar), a few years ago. Watch it below.

Jar Jar was charming.

What a bunch of wanked-out losers.

They all need an 'octorectomy'.

They disconnect the cord that connects your eyeballs to your asshole and it removes your shitty outlook on life.

I was by no means a big fan of Jar Jar at the time, but even then I knew it was mostly because I wasn't the target audience and so didn't begrudge his presence at all anymore than I did Ewoks or Jawas. I was well aware that the 8-10 year-olds at that time had just as much, if not more right to enjoy *their* Star Wars for the the first time, just as I did the original and a new generation is now (plus of course kids from a decade ago the grew up on The Clone Wars.) They've always been kid's movies first and foremost and as older fans, we should just feel privileged to get to be along for the ride for a second and now a third time.

A lot of fans my age say that TPM was when they fell out of love with Star Wars. For me, it's when I began to distance myself from the larger fandom, because the bile and vitriol I saw kicked around on a daily basis was just utterly alienating to me. Even to this day I sort of keep it at arm's length. More so than ever perhaps.

I don't think it really needs to be said that issuing death threats to an actor for playing a role you don't like is utterly deranged, to say the least. There's simply no sane justification that that kind of behaviour.

Death threats, not cool. But negative feedback, the proverbial tomato (or beer bottle) throwers, that's part of the territory of doing anything creative. Nevertheless, these days it seems like people take a perverse pleasure in celebrating failure. Witness popular youtube channels like Cinema Sins.

Sometimes the glee in which film and TV work is slagged seems to cross the line. It's like failure-porn. Schadenfreude.

Nevertheless, it's a free country and people have a right to bash work as much as they like.

I believe the bashing of the people that has occurred repeatedly throughout SW history is what is being condemned, not saying "That's a terrible movie." I have no problem voicing my disappointments with Rogue One, or ROTS, but that doesn't mean I wanted Lucas to suffer due to making them. It's a fine line of distinction that is being blurred which is not a good thing.

I never understood this "destroyed my childhood" line. How does a movie do that exactly?

Exactly.

I've been massively disappointed by the JP sequels, the Matrix sequels, some of the Predator movies. I absolutely refuse to acknowledge the existence of Wolverine Origins. But none of them 'destroyed' a damn thing. I still love Jurassic Park, the Matrix, the X-Men, etc, and I can still watch them and have a great time whenever I choose to. There is no such thing as a sequel that's so bad it can retroactively make a great movie unwatchable.

And even if there were, these are people doing a job, not puppets for our amusement. Just because you don't like the job they did doesn't mean they deserve to be punished and abused for it. Just imagine if you got this kind of hate from random strangers because some project at work didn't turn out like you hoped it would.
