January 2012 Challenge: "A New Day Is Dawning..."

Rush Limborg

All right, ladies and gentlemen!

First, thank you, Cobalt Frost, for last month's challenge entry--and thank you all, for your votes!

Okay...let's do this:

In honor of the New Year...Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to create a story with the theme of..."beginnings".

It can be an origin story for a character--or it can be the beginning of a new "time" that your characters will go through...or it can even be an "origin" for an element of the Star Trek universe (your personal universe, TrekLit, canon, or what have you) you want to tackle. Just construct a story with the theme of a beginning--something new, something old, doesn't matter.

Here are the rules:

Word limit: Considering my tale for last month's contest needed the generosity of Cobalt Frost...I will be similarly generous. 10,000 words max--and if need be, I'll allow a little bit over. No lower limit.

As always, your story must be an original tale for this contest--i.e, it can't be something you've posted before, in any form.

It must take place fully within the Star Trek universe. Nothing from other franchises.

Any story unfinished before the deadline will be disqualified from the vote. As such, please make sure that you only post after you've finished writing. Maybe what you write in a later chapter demands that you edit a previous section--and if you've already posted the chapter, it may be too late....

Finally--be sure to post in this thread the link to your story.

The deadline: Sunday, January 29, 11:59 PM, Eastern Standard Time.

The voting season will encompass the following Monday through Friday.

Good luck, everyone. :)

I may have something for this. We'll see if I can get it done on time, but I did do some of the preliminary research today. I went information-mining for some more on the SigCat universe.

Thank you, sir. If I get it done and posted and you feel it does not adequately meet the challenge theme, I will understand and withdraw it from consideration. :)

It's probably best not to get too hung up on details regarding what qualifies and what doesn't. At least that's my own opinion.

Yes you need rules in any contest but lets face facts here, these contests only ever end up with maybe three entries, most of which are written by the same people each month.

If someone spends their own time writing a story for a contest it seems a little churlish not to include it for the sake of some relatively minor entry requirement.

I haven't posted in quite a while, but have continued to lurk, and this challenge intrigues me greatly. Gonna give it a shot I think.

I may wait for the next one to participate, but I can't wait to read this month's entries!

Rules are established for a reason. There is room for leeway, but to discard them is to make the challenge pointless.

My entry: "Beginning Again" (When you click on the link it takes you to the fourth part. Please scroll to the top for the complete story.)

My idea for a NuTrek reboot story for Bluefin did not pan out for the challenge. Instead, meet Lt. Daniel Norden as he makes a new beginning on the USS Kearsarge. At least, he thinks it's a new beginning.
