Janeway's Voice

Maybe it doesn't bother me because my own speaking voice is pretty low. My vocal range is wide, and I spent a lot of time when I was younger fretting about my voice and how it should sound.

It's always been a bit raspy and low... even when she was playing Mary Ryan.

You're right. And she would have been way too young to have smoked herself into it at that age.

Yes... also, on Manions of America, Roots, and a few others where she is very young, he voice is higher (as are all women's voices), but it's still got that raspy quality.

I think it's an innate trait of Kate's. However, I'm fairly certain she did smoke at one point of time. I'm not sure that she's continued.

Her voice certainly isn't my favorite, but I don't hate it either. It definitely took a while for it to grow on me, but grow it did.

I notice teh menz on some of the other forums here go nuts for soft, sweet voices of Trek women.. Hoshi, Ezri, and always Kes. I just don't find anything appealing about this.

 Criticism of Ezri!

I'll have to get Rush Limborg on the case now! ;)

No no no no no.... I actually don't agree that Ezri's voice is particularly sweet. It doesn't have that smoooooth hynotic tone that Kes, Crusher and to an extent Hoshi has.

Please.. don't send Limborg after me.. read the threads, I love Ezri, I absolutely love her!!

I'm an alto... very low voice. My friends say I have a 'sex phone operator' voice. I've never been ashamed of it, and I think it's because of how much I've always adored Kate's voice.

I started watching Voyager in the German version and Janeway's German voice sounds rather arrogant. The actress who gave Janeway her voice didn't do a good job, Janeway sounds cold and sometimes maybe harsh when in fact she isn't. There's no emotion in her voice. But then, when I bought the DVDs, I watched Voyager in English for the first time and I was like  THAT is her original voice?! It sounded strange at first and I had to get used to it, but gradually I began to really like it.

I just watched "Virtuoso" last night and I LOVE it when Janeway says to the Doc in the Mess Hall "Maestro, you're finished for today. Doctor, report to sickbay NOW!" Could her voice be any sexier?! *sighs*

Now personally I love Janeway's voice. I love a lower voice on a woman. I notice teh menz on some of the other forums here go nuts for soft, sweet voices of Trek women.. Hoshi, Ezri, and always Kes. I just don't find anything appealing about this, in fact Kes's voice was really off putting to me. Maybe this is part of why Marilyn Monroe was so popular, her soft little girl voice (which was much more extreme than the Trek woman I've mentioned).

Infantile traits are often prized in women - small hands and feet, child-like voices, etc. This is not to imply that the above characters are infantile, just that their speaking voices may be perceived as more "desirable" because of this.

Meanwhile, there is nothing infantile about Janeway's voice and good for her. :)

Listening to Kathryn/Kate speak is soothing to me. I can close my eyes, and I know, without question or reservation, that what she is saying she believes in that moment. It is so full of emotion, of raw and powerful energy.

However, it is also intimidating. It makes you take notice. In a room full of people, she can open her mouth, and you know she is there. Not because she's loud or harsh or unfriendly, but because you can practically feel her contralto voice crawling over your skin.

It's akin to feeling the vibration of a bass guitar... titillating yet startling at the same time.

IMO Janeway's voice makes her sound like she's addicted to inhaling helium several times a day. It's extremely annoying to listen to, and the antithesis of sexy.

I've never understood the hate at Janeway's voice (or any other hate at Janeway). It really is a commanding voice so suits a captain. Sisko has a much more annoying voice and Kirk's voice just makes me laugh. Is there an unwritten rule that captains must have distinctive voices?
I've always found husky voices sexy, super high girly voices can be irritating. I like husky voices so much that it gives having a cough an up side.

I never much cared for ST: Voyager, but there's certainly nothing wrong with Kate Mulgrew's voice. I've always liked women with husky voices: Sally Kellerman, Lauren Hutton, Lizabeth Scott, young Lauren Bacall.
Like she smokes two packs a day and half a bottle of whiskey.

Well, not quite. A woman who smokes and drinks that much would end up sounding like Selma Diamond.

So . . . what are you wearing?

Janeway's voice was a strong part of her personality. I liked it. Women can sound great with lower voices.

I remember seeing part of a beauty pagent--"Hi! I'm so-and-so from the great state of whatever." Girl after girl in pretty little girly voices. Suddenly, a girl with a, I guess contralto(?) voice: "I'm yadda yadda yadda." WOW! I'm a straight female, but that was one sexy voice.

I had a friend like that at work, "This is Primary Standards. How may I help you?" When Hubby called, he'd end up stammering. And he worked down the dang hall! I told her he said she sounded like she was trying to seduce people over the phone. She hadn't realized the power her voice had over men in particular.

Well I like Janeway's voice. It realy suits her character. Can anyone seriously imagine a soft, sweet voice barking out orders being taken seriously? I sure as heck can't. Thats why kes' voice works. Cause she's soft and cute, like her voice. Am I making sense here?

Great points here. People actually pay Kate Mulgrew money to hear her voice. It can't be that bad.

I personally agree with all the above statements. However I saw Dallas with Kate in it when she was younger, she was singing, t wasn't so hot... but she still was ;)

Let me tell you about that...

Kate has always said, since Ryan's Hope, that she cannot sing.

When she was cast to play that role in Dallas, she took it because it was a role. The producers decided that her voice was too low when she was singing. So, in post production, they sped it up. Thus, she sounds like a chipmunk when she sings, but has that wonderful sultry voice when she speaks.
