Janeway's Voice

A thread on the DS9 board wandered into discussing which female had the sexiest voice. One thing I've had to defend from Janeway detractors is criticism of her voice.

A friend of mine has seen smatterings of most of the Trek series and the first thing she said about Trek in our first Trek conversation was that she could not watch VOY because she "hated Janeway's voice."

Mr. Teacake used to say he couldn't stand Janeway's voice, he said he could hear it 2 rooms away "like a rasping saw". He would occasionally bark out orders he heard Janeway saying in his interpretation of her voice. He did say once though that when watching an ep rather than hearing it from the distance that it didn't bother him at all. (He doesn't watch Trek but has gotten sucked into VOY a few times when The Doctor was being funny).

And I've heard the voice criticism from others over the years.

Now personally I love Janeway's voice. I love a lower voice on a woman. I notice teh menz on some of the other forums here go nuts for soft, sweet voices of Trek women.. Hoshi, Ezri, and always Kes. I just don't find anything appealing about this, in fact Kes's voice was really off putting to me. Maybe this is part of why Marilyn Monroe was so popular, her soft little girl voice (which was much more extreme than the Trek woman I've mentioned).

When I hear Janeway's voice I hear.. CHARACTER. Strength. Pragmatism. I always loved Katherine Hepburn's voice too, at least in The African Queen which was the Hepburn movie I watched with frequency. What others hear as raspy, I hear as pragmatism, to me pragmatism has a raspy element.

I get rather upset that people dismiss or recoil from Janeway because of her voice. Maybe this kind of voice in females is so infrequently used now by Hollywood that people just aren't used to it. We probably hear far more diversity in people's voices just in everyday life than Hollywood gives us.

Kate has always been known for her voice.

It's unique.
It's genuine.
It's honest.
It's sexy as hell.

I've heard the same criticisms, but I just wave it away because I find it sexy.

LOL, I guess I feel the need to somehow correct the detractors because.. they are WRONG. :rommie:

We who know the truth simply have to present it. If they choose not to recognize, it is their loss. ;)

Gawd, I could listen to that woman read the phone book.

Honestly, I found her voice annoying at first. In fact, I found Janeway altogether annoying at first. I know, I'm shocking everyone who was just in the "Talkin' about Janeway" thread with me, but it's true. I really didn't like her, didn't like her, didn't like her, then I watched "Deadlock" and said "that woman is the STUFF". After that, I found her voice more appealing, and now I'd happily join Admiral Hawthorne in listening to her read the phone book.

I am pleased to hear your conversion story. I will keep it in mind when faced with the detractors.

I..... I think I might drink the KoolAid for her. :shifty: :wtf:

To be fair to the detractors, I think part of it was the producers and/or the sound crew. Often in the first season her voice has sounded "unfamiliar" to me, as if someone was "acting powerful" rather than simply being powerful.

Mulgrew often talks about those early years as a fight with the producers to let Janeway "be", to trust the actress more than the bean counters.

Although we often can find spots in season 1 where "that voice" sneaks out, it isn't until the later seasons that Kate let's it have its way, producers be damned!

I suspect a lot of "true detractors" are running into the harsher/louder version of our beloved Captain from season 1 because those frightened producers forgot an old military maxim.

"If you have to tell me you are in charge (by screaching loudly) then you're obviously not in charge.

You know I can't remember which eps but I know a few times I was watching and I felt a little squirmy because some character was being asked to do something that would probably kill them and they just let Janeway seduce them into it..! And you know they do it for her, not for the Federation or Starfleet or any other boring thing to die for.

I'll get the dixie cups!

Her voice certainly isn't my favorite, but I don't hate it either. It definitely took a while for it to grow on me, but grow it did.

 Criticism of Ezri!

I'll have to get Rush Limborg on the case now! ;)
