Janeway returning to Trek Lit? (Possible Spoilers)

Re: Janeway returning to Trek Lit?

Well the excerpt is pretty good. I am reminded of an old writing rule, Chekhov’s Gun.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chekhov%27s_gun

Chekhov's gun is a literary technique whereby an apparently irrelevant element is introduced early in the story whose significance becomes clear later in the narrative. The concept is named after Russian playwright Anton Chekhov, who mentioned several variants of the concept in letters.

The phrase "Chekhov's gun" is often interpreted as a method of foreshadowing, but the concept can also be interpreted as meaning "do not include any unnecessary elements in a story." Failure to observe the rule of "Chekhov's gun" may be cited by critics when discussing plot holes.

Chekhov's statements of this principle
• "One must not put a loaded rifle on the stage if no one is thinking of firing it." Chekhov, letter to Aleksandr Semenovich Lazarev (pseudonym of A. S. Gruzinsky), 1 November 1889.
• "If in the first act you have hung a pistol on the wall, then in the following one it should be fired. Otherwise don't put it there." From Gurlyand's Reminiscences of A. P. Chekhov, in Teatr i iskusstvo 1904, No. 28, 11 July, p. 521.’[1]
• "If you say in the first chapter that there is a rifle hanging on the wall, in the second or third chapter it absolutely must go off. If it's not going to be fired, it shouldn't be hanging there." From S. Shchukin, Memoirs (1911)

Re: Janeway returning to Trek Lit?

Let's hope Chekhov's gun in this case is Janeway and not Chak's sister.

I think that both characters would fall under the Chekhov's Gun trope, we should be seeing them both. This is the set up, the hook to get the reader started.

Re: Janeway returning to Trek Lit?

For anyone who's interested, Simon&Schuster has posted an exerpt of TET on its website, part of the 1st chapter from the beginning, FYI: http://books.simonandschuster.com/S...Beyer/Star-Trek-Voyager/9781451668186/excerpt (lol, it's starting....)

Wekk I guess we all will just have to wait and see.

(Pretend I'm the cowardly lion...

"I DO believe in ghosts.

I DO believe in ghosts.

I DO I DO I DO, I DO believe in ghosts!!!!")

Re: Janeway returning to Trek Lit?

But hopefully she ISN'T a ghost :)

Well DUH!

But it starts with an apparition and then becomes a fully realized being... IF Kirsten wants a surrogate child!!!

I'm surprised Chakotay called Eden's dream a "Captain's dream".

Sounds like a typical ENSIGN'S NIGHTMARE... the world is going to hell in a handbasket and JANEWAY is there to see it all happen.

Re: Janeway returning to Trek Lit?

I've just been advised that my copy has arrived in Sydney, Australia and is awaiting collection from Galaxy Bookshop!

Re: Janeway returning to Trek Lit?

Btw how are we going to handle spoilers in this thread? I, and I suspect more than a few others would like to know ahead of time whether Janeway is back for good. Do we need all the discussions spoiler tagged? Or should we ask for the thread title to be changed to say SPOILERS to warn off people who don't want to know?

I await the thread consensus :)

Re: Janeway returning to Trek Lit?

I'm avoiding this thread and the Trek Lit Voyager ones until I've gotten and finished the book. And if someone posts a "JANEWAY IS BAAAAACK!!!" or "IT WAS A LIIIIIE!!!!!!1!!" thread spoiling it, they won't wake up the next morning.

Re: Janeway returning to Trek Lit?

Some candyass moron ensign is going to start a thread like...

"Rejoice, Kathryn Janeway has returned!!!"

or

"Ding dong, the bitch is still dead!"

I fucking loath Ensigns.

Re: Janeway returning to Trek Lit?

Yeah.. I think you may have to avoid the whole board KingDaniel until you finish the book. Except the ST:XII countdown thread. You do have obligations

Re: Janeway returning to Trek Lit?

I don't suppose you mind turning to the last page first and giving us an immediate report ?!

"The saga of USS Voyager will continue."

Actually, I don't pick it up till Saturday, so that's a guess. Am doing a course on my usual pick-up night (Thursday).
