Janeway Died? In Which Book?

Lynx - you don't think it defangs the Borg a bit if the serious, implacable enemy is entirely unable to kill any important character? Doesn't that seem a little absurd?

Maybe, but why Janeway and why now? Why not Picard in "Best Of Both Worlds" or the whole Voyager crew in that episode where some of them were assimilated?

As for the Borg, they were already "defanged" when Hugh and the Borg Queen entered the scene in TNG and they have lost everything since then. I would be happy if they were ditched for good and a new enemy was brought in.

Well, since you're never reading Destiny, just let me say that this is a really unintentionally ironic statement you just made.

That's exactly what's happened/is going to happen in the TNG books. You got what you wanted and you're still complaining. Guess I'm on the internet...

In which way?

Anyway, I'm tired of the Borg. They were scary when they first showed up in TNG but all which was interesting and scary started to dissapeared with Hugh and the Borg Queen. Then they became more and more goofy.

As for the books, the Borg plague in "Homecoming" and "The Farther Shore" was like something from a Monty Python movie. I regard Christie Golden as a good author, I really like "Marooned" and "The Murdered Sun" but that Borg plague was silly.

The Borg in Destiny are not funny people...
They weren't scary to me in TNG, or ever, except in Destiny.

Well, if it hadn't been for the recent "Janeway incident", I might have reevalued my decision not to read any TNG books. I mean, Data can be brought back if they decide to put his memory into that other identical android.

But now................:(

but that would lessen the nobility of his death

data and janeway's deaths were for the same reason, they had achieved the goals they had set out to do, and anything beyond that wouldn't have worked

Janeway had got her crew home, job done, yes she could have hung around as an admiral, or gone off back to the DQ, but what would have been the point? The ST Universe becomes more real when things change, if everything stayed the same then the franchise would've died long ago...

Data's death was poignant because it was a call-back to farpoint - he wanted to become human, he sacrificed himself for his friends and shipmates, he finally understood what it was to be human, and as such, anything beyond that was unnecessary.

Janeway is dead? Another reason why I avoid Star Trek and Star Wars novels. This is the worst news since a planet fell on Chewbacca. Oh well, fortunately as far as I'm concerned, if it ain't on the stage it aint on the page.

I never thought I'd see the Trek equivalent to "Dumbledore's not dead!! He's not!!" Should've known better.

Anything that exists in any fandom existed in Trek fandom first. You should've heard the outrage in response to Spock's death, even before the movie came out.

My god is all this rehash still going on? Who said perpetual motion is impossible?

Perpetual motion is when something keeps running without any energy put into it. I daresay some people are putting a great deal of energy into keeping this thread cycling back over the same points ad nauseam.

Thank you for sharing your deep, thoughtful, and unprecedented insight with us. The fans of treklit thank you profoundly for informing us that what we enjoy doesn't matter.

Kudos, sir.

And yet, it attracted your attention long enough to wander into a message board devoted to the very thing you profess to avoid, and make sure we all knew your position.

This is why fandom never fails to crack me up.

Well when I saw "Janeway Died" in bold letters on the main page it caught my attention. Don't worry though I doubt I'll be back in here any time soon. Enjoy your little corner of the universe.

Wait, wait, wait. Hang on.

The possibility that someday it'd be possible for Data to return - even though you know that he hasn't in any of the TNG-R books so far - was close to being enough for you to read them?

Well, hell, Janeway's last scene was Lady Q taking her off to dimensions unknown - there's absolutely a possibility that she'll be back someday! For that matter, in a universe of so many alternate dimensions and time travel, there's a possibility for ANY character to come back someday!

Yes, it won't happen in any immediately foreseeable Voyager relaunch books... but you know for a FACT that it hasn't happened in any current TNG-R books and were still considering reading those. But the fact that a similar situation was occurring in the VOY-R books was so bad that you wouldn't even be willing to read any other series that might someday mention them?

Holy crap, this doesn't make any sense to me at all.

You know who else killed people for reasons I don't agree with? Hitler.

Okay, there, now that Godwin's Law has been proven, can this thread be put out of its misery?

^ Only if you agree that if this happens to Taran'atar, I also get a 10-page thread on it...
