Jammer reviews Star Trek

Come on guys? Absolutely no reactions?

I thought it was a nice detailed review. Looks like Jammer thought Pine and Quinto were the highlights which I agreed with. I'm just really glad he didn't take like a year to release this...

I like his observation "I was almost never genuinely exhilarated."

To be genuinely exhilarated even once during a commercial action movie - especially a Trek movie, at this point - is more than I ever expect going in. I'd call that a "home run" for sure.

He's also right about the "comfort food" aspect of Star Trek, needless to say. And I'm pleased to see that he enjoyed the backstory on McCoy's nickname.

Thanks for the heads up. Off to read it now!

I'm glad Jammer liked it. As always his review is very well-written and has a few laughs. I liked this line the most ...

Making these fanboy arguments is part of the fun, albeit a complete waste of time.
So true.

Glad to see the review up! I've been visiting his website every few days hoping to see it. Glad he finally got the time to write his review.

I usually quite enjoy his reviews.

Of course. :)

I agree with this review. The new Star Trek was good, but not great. Especially since the movie had a average plot, a cliche bad guy with dubious motives and brought no relevant question about humanity and society. On the other hand, it had good action and good humor. They handled the rebooting of the old characters very well. I'm a big fan of time travel stories, when done right, so I didn't have problem with this one. Since the movie have successfully been able to put Trek back into the mainstream. I'm glad it got made and wish for better a storyline, drama, exploration/mystery, and social commentaries for the next movies.

Jammer writes the BEST reviews. Being a VOY fan, I never agreed with all his points against the show, but they were well written and well thought out, and from a guy who clearly loves the franchise.

I also agree with every word he says about the new movie - I too really liked it but not completely in love with it. If there had been an option I would have given it between Excellent and Above Average. Or maybe 8.5 or 9 out of 10. A really good film, not a great film. Maybe next time. :)

Thanks for the heads up.

Very good review. I agree with almost everything he said, but his final overall rating is a bit too low, as it underestimates how incredibly difficult it was for Abrams et al. to reboot the franchise successfully while pleasing fans and nonfans alike. This was a remarkable accomplishment!

His reviews are usually pretty accurate, but I gotta object to this:

Truthfully, perhaps Trek's ability to endure has less to do with an optimistic philosophy and more to do with cynical capitalism, effective marketing, shrewd business sense, and steadfast tenacity. Paramount will not let this proven franchise sit idly when there is cash-money to be made.
This makes no sense. Is Hollywood somehow lax in its capitalistic instincts in regards to everything except Star Trek? Nobody in Hollywood is going to be "tenacious" or bother with "effective marketing" for something they perceive as a loser.

The main reasons Star Trek has been revived are because 1) JJ Abrams was interested in doing a movie and 2) despite years of mismanagement, there is still plenty of appeal left in Star Trek. And both of those have the same source - the attractive pull of its optimistic philosophy, sense of adventure, wonder and hope. Attractive to Abrams, attractive to us. The marketing, capitalistic zeal and tenacity simple follow in its powerful wake.

Try doing the same thing with the Terminator franchise. Can't be done - there isn't enough to the thing. It's just killer robots vs grubby humans. No wonder it's run out of steam. Most things run out of steam like that. Star Trek is highly unusual in that it doesn't seem able to run out of steam entirely. It generates its own steam.

Especially since the movie had a average plot, a cliche bad guy with dubious motives and brought no relevant question about humanity and society.

Those were definitely the handicaps, but the plot and the villain won't be back for the next movie, and the strengths (Pine, Quinto, and all the Star Trek "stuff") will. So they got the important stuff right. I'd also like to see more from McCoy. As for the larger "relevancy" issues, maybe the next movie can do more along those lines, but as I've said before, a two-hour, action-packed extravaganza isn't the right place for such things. Trek needs to get its butt back on TV.

I have always enjoyed Jammer's reviews, and I admire his writing. He's not neccessarily a Roger Ebert type film critic, he's a fan like us, but he seems very centrist in his opinions. He's not an elitist but not a casual fan either.

Jammer almost always gives clear, well thought out insight into a film or episode. His observations on the Trek franchise are always a delight.

I have so far tended to agree with his reviews, he didn't think NEM was as bad as people made it out to be and thinks Trek XI is a good film but not a great one. That's pretty much where I fall as well.

kudos to that man for always giving us such well written fan reviews.
