Usually, it seem females get hooked up with 'bad boys', but in this ep, Kirk shows his feminine side! Kudos to Shat & Sandra Smith for pulling it off.

Yep, they both pulled off a memorable performance - and Kirk/Lester nonchalantly filing his/her nails while talking to Bones will be forever burnt in my memory.
And I think it's not too farfetched to say that Kirk always had a soft spot for the "bad girls". I mean, they all had a certain "rebel" aspect to them: Edith Keeler, of course, who was far ahead of her times, and not willing to just accept the circumstances and to go along with them, or Leonore Karidian who was, well, nuts, but also highly intelligent and not a wallflower by all means. Or Rayna, who is pure and immaculate on the one hand, but who also is pretty strong-willed and has an impressive intellect - definitely no one to be pushed around, not to mention Miramanee who's obviously used to making her own choices. All things considered, Janice Lester does not deviate as far as it may seem from the sample, only that she went a bit over the top in the end…

I have dated many a woman who started out as very sweet and awesome and turned into the psychobitch from hell!! We've all had one or two in our lives. I can imagine Kirk did too. He also seems to be a "love 'em, leave 'em" kind of guy, driven more by his career than the need to settle down with some babe and make little Jimmies. I can see some disgruntled ex-girlfriend becoming a vengeful psychopath. I am surprised Kirk didn't have more of them and I thought this was portrayed perfectly in this episode.

Nah, it's more simple than that. Lester was obviously career-driven like Kirk was (a recurring theme in Kirk's women) and their relationship "ended badly" when Kirk returned to Starfleet. Basically, she ws a psycho-bitch (the relatively normal kind) to begin with, which evidently surfaced when Kirk left back for the fleet. ("Your world of starships doesn't include women" takes on a more significant, and realistic, meaning if you realize she was badmouthing Kirk alone, after all.)
Dr. Lester carried basic resentment, which magnified as Kirk became more and more legendary in his exploits. We also know that her resentment and animosity was selfishly enabled by the man who 'loved' her in the episode (forgot the character's name) so much that he was a more-than-willing accomplish to her insanity.
Basically, she was in an echo chamber that kept reassuring her growing insanity, years after someone would have come along to say "grow the hell up, already" in a more normal environment. But she was isolated with a man with vested interest in coddling her up... creating the crazy we all know and wince about.

Jokes aside -- y'know, the woman who played Lester (and I don't recall her name) made a damn fine Kirk. A wretcehd episode, yes. And I did not believe Shatner playing her. But I sure as hell believed her as Kirk. The scenes in the brig, in the hearing room? She was Kirk.
So kudos to her!
