James Horner, Film Composer for 'Star Trek' Dies in Plane Crash

Just heard about his passing :(. So sad, RIP Mr. Horner. We'll miss you. Condolences go out to his family and friends.

Sad doesn't even begin to cover it. Horner's soundtracks are truly legendary, and have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Every time I went on an out-of-state school field trip, I always brought with me Horner's "Apollo 13" score to play as the bus pulled out of the school parking lot. His work on Star Trek II & III, for me, has no equal. To think that there will never be another movie scored by James Horner... It breaks my heart. :weep:

:(

Rest in Peace, Mr. Horner. You and your exceptional talents were enjoyed by generations of music lovers and movie audiences.

Thanks for the legacy.

So, so sad. So much great music. I had just posted a few days ago in another thread how much I loved his score for "Sneakers." And he was a huge contributor to the revival of the Star Trek franchise with his score for TWOK. America and the world, not just Hollywood, have lost a significant composer.

I am struggling cope with all this.

Maurice Hurley
Leonard Nimoy
Harve Bennett
Grace Lee Whitney
James Horner

All passed in the first 6 months of this year. T_T

RIP Mr. Horner. Your music has touched so many lives.

Not to mention the scare we got with Nichelle Nichols' stroke, however mild it may have been. Jeez, I didn't even know about Maurice Hurley's passing...

No! I didn't know about Maurice Hurley either! :(

James Horner composed some of the most iconic scores of the past 35 years. His work on Wrath of Khan played a huge part in the revival of the Star Trek franchise, but there were so, so many more films and accolades to come (including two Oscars for his work on Titanic). He was only 61, and was still going strong. I read that he was working with James Cameron on the next two Avatar movies, and apparently there are no less than three films being released in the next 12 months that he has scored.

My condolences to his family, friends, and his millions of fans and admirers.

What is with this year? While people (famous ones as well) die every year, why are so many I know dying this year? And I don't mean just this list. Personal people and family too this year.

I just heard of his passing this morning. No lie, I listened to both Star Trek II and III late yesterday afternoon waiting for my wife to come home from work. This is very sad news indeed. RIP, Mr. Horner, thank you for your wonderful work. You will surely be missed.

Yep, this is a shock. In the other thread I listed film scores of his that I really enjoyed. I'll just repost here:

The charges of borrowing be damned, I've really enjoyed his music, for both TWOK and TSFS. Looking over his list of scores, I also enjoyed his work for Brainstorm, Battle Beyond the Stars, 48 Hrs., Krull, Commando, Aliens, The Name of the Rose, Sneakers, Patriot Games, my goodness Clear and Present Danger, Apollo 13, Deep Impact, A Beautiful Mind, man, they really just keep coming.... If I left anything out, it wasn't on purpose.

Rest In Peace, Mr. Horner!

(repeated from another thread)
Very sad news indeed.
It seemed like if it wasn't Jerry Goldsmith doing a score for something, James Horner would be the other stand out name, especially during the 80's.

I liked a lot of Horner's work too.

I think they forgot to mention one little sci-fi movie that he also did the score for (and the main title is one of my favorite themes) "Battle Beyond the Stars". (this was in response to a friend who posted news of this on another forum I visit)

RIP James Horner. May you and Mr. Goldsmith make great scores among the angels.

Sadness doesn't quite describe how I feel right now. I think I'm in the shock stage. I don't want to believe this, but I know that this is reality, and no amount of wishing can do anything to change it.

Caligula nailed it right on the head: the fact that he will no longer make any more scores is heart-breaking, especially when by all rights, he had at least another decade left to do so.

The last several years hasn't been friendly to my favorite composers, what with Jerry Goldsmith and Joel Goldsmith now gone.

And to think that I started to listen to his TWOK score yesterday.

Was very shocked to hear about this on the news this morning. Just couldn't believe it. They said he was only 61 - such a horrible waste of an amazing talent. I always secretly hoped he might be one day asked to return to score another Trek film. Guess it will never happen now.

As M.A.C.O. pointed out earlier, this has been an extremely sad year in the fandom with all the major losses that have been suffered.

Rest In Peace, Mr. Horner. You WILL be missed! :(

Thus far, there has still been no official confirmation of Horner's death... only an internet post by his assistant. Horner owns 61 planes. I'm taking a "wait and see" approach, for now.

It's been a bad year. I've lost 3 family members, a coworker, and two past bosses this year so far...Brutal.
