James Horner and "The Amazing Spider Man"

I watched "The Amazing Spiderman" this weekend. Throughout the entire movie I kept thinking that the soundtrack was a lot like TWOK. There were several themes that were almost identical to TWOK. Did anyone else notice that? I wasn't surprised when the final credits ran to see Horner's name.

I must admit that I didn't notice it in spidey, but that's probably because I wasn't paying enough attention ;) I certainly know what you're talking about though; there were a few moments in his score for avatar that I thought were particularly reminiscent of the wrath of khan

I was particularly fond of his reuse of "Genesis Countdown" from Wrath of Khan in the movie "Cocoon."

I did notice a couple of bits that reminded me of bits from Titanic, but nothing particularly stuck out as being TWOK-ish to me.

Edit: And there was a cue that sounded a lot like the main theme from Deep Impact too. Doesn't really bother me though.

Darn, I'm going to see the movie today, and I was really hoping Horner had finally outgrown his self-imitation.

That would be surprising, as he hasn't reused elements from TWOK for years. Except that Genesis Countdown rhythm, that appears in all of his soundtracks.

I think the less he's interested in a project, the more he recycles.

Much of Horner's score was backround noice for me, I barely noticed most of the movie's music. But alittle repetition is to be expected.

Actually, I was so glad that the music was better than in the first spidey movies is I didn't bother trying to tell if it reminded me of anything else.

Well, I'm back from the movie now, and my fears weren't realized. The only part where he directly quoted something I recognized from his earlier work was in the POV shot that led to our first look at the full Spider-Man costume, where he borrowed an ascending horn motif he used several times in his Trek scores. Other than that, the music didn't sound overly much like the James Horner style I got sick of hearing in the '80s. He has evolved and broadened as a composer since then. Maybe people who are familiar with his more recent scores would notice more reused elements, but it sounded almost entirely fresh to me. The end title theme does have a Horneresque quality to its melody, but the orchestration is different so it doesn't feel like more of the same to me. I think he is working with different orchestrators these days than he used in the '80s.

Listened to the samples on Amazon, and I have to say that this sounds VERY different from Horner's usual scores.

I just saw it last night and I heard hints from Titanic but there was a motif that occured a lot that sounded like Aliens.

Just saw it yesterday, and while I definitely noticed a smidge of borrowing, most specifically early on in the film, overall I wouldn't say this is one of his more recycled scores. I'll be curious to see what Filmtracks thinks of it.
