James Cawley cast in Trek XI

GothTrek

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Cawley in Trek XI at Trek Movie

Should be interesting. I personally am hyped up about this, but on the same note this is a BRILLIANT marketing tool for James to use towards NV. I know people will now start slamming his acting capabilities, but hey... he's doing what we all have dreamed of so kudos for him.

Well done James!

i am glad they got the uniforms right. cawley would be one to know and this is a good sign.

good luck to you james.

Huh? I'm sorry, but do you think he knows any better or worse about how Star Trek uniforms 'should' look than you do?

I agree. I wouldn't make uniforms anywhere near as accurate as I do today if it weren't for James Cawley spending many an hour on the phone with me.

 we've all dreamed about acting poorly in a star trek fan film? Nah, I'm just kidding, it should be pretty interesting.

Absolutely I do. I have seen first hand James work and reference material and held them side by side next to his original pieces. No one knows as much as James does about Trek costuming.

I was referring to how he loves Trek so much he made his own, and now he is doing the real thing,.

That may be true in terms of exactly duplicating the look of the original series. But what's that got to do with this new film?

Wow, this is a fun turn of events, good on him! I had a similar chance encounter with Trek on the Paramount lot, so stranger things have happened!

If James is visiting the board in the coming days, I'm wondering what brought him out there in the first place?

He was simply speaking to the look of the uniforms in the new film based on his knowledge of Trek uniforms.

James used to be a costume designer. Also he didn't say the new uniforms are exactly like the originals, he said they were "The uniforms are perfect, spot on perfect. I wouldn't have done anything any different. When I saw the look of what he was going for, he's got it". I think the key phrase there is that JJ was going for a particular look- not the exact look of the old show, but his own vision of what Starfleet uniforms should be.

Strange choice on Abrams part. Cawley's a lucky guy and I wish him well, but I really don't see the point of this.

I hope his is a non-speaking, decidedly background, just sitting there pushing buttons kind of role. I also hope this is the last of the "fan clutter" that makes it into the film.

Hey that's cool. I can't even "badly act" so not gonna judge him on that and I do enjoy NVs.

He makes a good artistic point about how he would "have done things differently, but I'm not JJ Abrams..." all artists have to go with their guts. Nor of course is James Cawley accountable to bean counters who expect to make a profit from this endeavor which of course changes everything, though think sometimes the fans don't want to hear that or care to accept that aspect of Star Trek.

Curious what he said about the uniforms... hmmm, are we to take from it that some of the leaked images aren't the only style of uniforms we should be expecting to see on screen and that there are some similar to the ToS style?

I hope he is a background character they kill off quickly. Frankly im sick of hearing about this hack.

Yeeahhhh....I know it's something of a Trek tradition to have fan cameos, but first that professor, not Cawley...I hope that's IT, because more of this kind of thing diminishes things a bit.

Good for James! I'm sure that he'll do just fine, and have a wonderful time in the process.

The interview with him over at www.trekmovie.com is well worth checking out. I'm more and more intrigued by what's been suggested about the sets.
