TOLDYA! Cameron CONFIRMS That AVATAR 2 Will Journey To Other Polyphemus Moons

Jim here. Thanks to Kostas2 for the heads up on this ultra cool interview with Jim Cameron! Two kids with Na'vi makeup had the chance to briefly speak with Cameron about AVATAR and in particular where the sequels may take place.

Here is what Cameron said at the 1:30m point of the clip:
"About the other moon? I can't say anything about the other moons in the Polyphemus system because that's top secret, because they're going to appear in the sequel".

Well the wife and I enjoyed it last night, the 3D was pretty impressive. Yes the story and characters were all broadly painted, but the whole thing was well done so I'll give that a pass. Not sure if it's something I'd buy on Blu-Ray/DVD and watch over and over, but I certainly don't regret seeing it in the theater.

I'm pretty sure this has been more or less strongly hinted prior to this, definitely I've read that before.

Still, the question remains: What's on the other moon of Polyphemus? Is there sapient life, or is it just a different sort of terrain? And moreover, why do the Na'vi go there (as we know Jake Sully is returning)? And why do the humans go there (because I find it hard to imagine the film will lack any significant human roles)? Hmmm.

Maybe the ante is upped somehow. It could be that the other planet is just Pandora Mark II - more resources, a more vulnerable alien race, humans come in to crush 'em, Na'vi arrive to provide aid, or something. Or they could be a third force, or there could be no such third species, just some other reason everyone wants to go there. I'm perplexed in truth.

Maybe the humans set up base there so as to launch an offensive against Pandora? If the moon is indeed a living mind unto itself, who knows how well it can prepare itself for another offensive, and what it can even do, now that it's knowledgeable and on alert.

Man, the possibilities are exciting! :)

Speaking of 1500 posts...I'm not going to go back to check whether this has been posted here yet:

http://www.awn.com/articles/visual-effects/avatar-game-changer

Really interesting article partly because of the images of the way that the CG work was done.

While it may have been relaxing (or not) during shooting to exchange the makeup process for a helmet and some green dots, one wonders how Saldana feels about so many pictures of her sans glamor makeup floating around the Internet now.

How you folks have managed to generate 1500 posts about this film is beyond me.

A lot of those posts were posts expressing surprise about how many posts there were.

Perhaps the thread could eventually become self-sustaining on the basis of such posts alone.

Of course you'd need to feed it a steady stream of newly incredulous posters. :shifty:

Well...no. Those words aren't really synonyms.
Po-TAY-to & Po-TAH-to aren't really synonyms, either. ;)

Besides, it was just a playful joke. Geez, folk in these here parts really do take their Avatar opinions seriously, don't they?

For maximum effect, you'd need some of those new posters to comment on similarities to Ferngully and you'll get plenty of self-sustaining posts (like this one!) commenting on how often Ferngully is mentioned.

It's been confirmed now that Cameron is writing an "Avatar" prequel novel dealing with back story that wasn't touched on in the film like the war that Jake fought and the death of his twin Tommy. Probably also Dr. Augustine's original interaction with the Na'Vi will be touched on as well and the book hopefully out by the end of the year. I guess that the previously reported "Avatar" novelization has been either put on hold for now or Cameron changed his mind and wants to write a prequel book instead. I'm personally excited about this.

Given that the game which James Cameron spent a half-hour raving about at E3, promising - as everyone behind every licensed game does - that it wouldn't be like every other licensed game, turned out to be like every other licensed game, I wouldn't get too excited just yet. ;)

Yay!

I'd be interested in the novel.

Cameron has been rather candid, in a short interview posted over at AICN, about the extent to which they stretched plausibility in some of the areas where they invoked scientific explanations for things - like the floating mountains. It's pretty standard cheating for so-called "hard science fiction" - ie, the principles work but the strength of the fields would have to be ridiculous - and that said, Cameron plays fairer with the "science" part of "science fiction" than anyone making comparable commercial films has in a long, long time.
