James Cameron: "There are too many superhero movies"

Cameron does have a point, although I don't think we're at that point quite yet. I would love to see more Batman, more Superman and I am waiting on the Flash, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern o be made...

But at some point we will have exhausted the limits of this genre. We're getting close but we're not there yet.

This is still the golden age of Hollywood super hero movies.

That's a fair point. I'm willing to admit my judgment is clouded because I think Cameron is one of the overrated directors ever. I just can't see myself liking his version of Spider-Man.

Terminator
Aliens
Terminator 2
Titanic

Regardless of what you think about Titanic it was the biggest movie ever and was the biggest achievement in special effects since Jurassic Park. The man is dedicated to his craft.

If you don't think the first three movies on that list were bad-ass I can't help you, you should never watch an action movie again because there is no way you could ever possibly be satisfied. ;)

Well, Terminator was just a knock-off of Harlan Ellison's Outer Limits works, Aliens is just "Them!" only coming off of the successful "Alien" and T2 has a lousy script that no one paid attention to because of how successful Terminator 1 was.

I am still waiting on a Superman movie that blows the 1978 Superman movie away...Don't say it won't happen as much as I love CR as Superman...a better movie can be made with todays technology...small glimpses of that were in SR...very small glimpses.

Cameron shows he doesn't actually know how deep the roster of "good ones" are.
Sure some second tier ones have eeked out(Ghost Rider, Daredevil, Punisher). I'd argue Iron Man was second tier as far as the masses pop culture awareness of him but guess what he's now top tier in pop culture awareness.
A few third tier ones(Blade, Catwoman, Elektra) but those were cause the budgets were low.

I'd say Green Lantern has the same potential as Iron Man. To go from moderate awareness to big pop culture impact. Same for Thor, Captain America & The Avengers. I doubt all 4 will achieve Iron Man type surprise but I'd bet half do and the other two achieve modest success.

DC has just recently formed a division to mine its as yet to be done "good ones". They have the rest of the JLA big 7 they could do(ok maybe not Martian Manhunter), Flash and Wonder Woman.

James Cameron has no idea how deep the well really is.
Did I mention I don't care about Avatar? Idiotic statements like this irk me and give me personal reason to not see his movie for $10-14(IMAX).

I think The Legion Of Superheroes would make a great movie too.

While technology was important in providing Superman: The Movie the verisimilitude that Richard Donner was looking for, it wasn't what made the movie so great. What made it great was the writing of Tom Mankiewicz.

I think James Cameron has more ego than talent. I recently rewatched Titanic and the acting was awful and the effects now seem somewhat dated. While T2 was a genuinely a good film, Terminator was average. So was Aliens, the original Alien is clearly the superior film. The Abyss was a pretty good film. So I've completely enjoyed only two of his films. I think he's massively overrated, especially in his own mind.

I wanna see James Cameron take on Superman...his mind will change.

That could be really f---in' awesome!

I would have hated a James Cameron Spider-Man, possibly even more than I already hate Sam Raimi Spider-Man. *sigh*

Why do you say that? I understand you don't appreciate the Raimi version of Spider-Man and after three movies you have ample examples, but we haven't seen what James Cameron's version of Spider-Man would have been like, so how can you judge? It might have been awesome.

Well, there have been at least partial summaries of Cameron's treatment for Spider-Man floating around for over a decade now. I think we can at least make some initial judgments about it. While I love much of Cameron's work (Aliens, The Terminator), I'm uncomfortable with some of the sexual elements in his Spider-Man, such as the webbing-bondage mentioned earlier or webbing as a metaphor for wet dreams. Still, I'd guess that Cameron's Spider-Man would have been better than J.J. Abrams' Superman.

There will never be a better Superman than Christopher Reeve. However, I concur that the perfect Superman movie has yet to be made. I've found all of the movies to be somewhat lacking in the narrative department. Superman II had the best villains but it still has its problems. (Superman gives up his powers in order to be with a woman who has all but said that he's not good enough for her as Clark Kent. Superman gets his powers back again 20 minutes later.)

I don't think we are even close. Too many superhero movies. That's like saying we have too much science fiction, or too much action, or whatever. It's a genre. Plenty of great characters with stories to tell (it's not just about the Marquee names) and further, plenty of ways to approach the genre that haven't been done yet.

Cameron is an awesome director, but yeah, I agree, he's just being a bitter bastard over Spider-Man.

Jimmy, go dry your eyes on your millions and STFU.

I've only seen Titantic once... what was the visual effects achievement it did? The water flooding the sets was real, so are you talking about the shots of the ship breaking up and sinking? What was ground breaking about that?

Going to the actual wreck and shooting scenes there was pretty ground breaking.

The environment at that depth is just about as hostile as space.

So let me get this straight. There are too many super-hero movies but not enough evil "military"missing with the innocent sweet natives movies.

How many love movies, action movies, spy movies, comedy movies, drama movies, cop movies, evil aliens, star trek movies, star wars movies, military movies, animated movies .............................................

one of the dumbest statements ever. He should have said there are too many movies being made period and it would have still been stupid.

Who wouldn't have liked this?

Me. James Cameron doesn't make bad movies. Every movie he makes is a cultural event. Rule of The Universe #1.

Raimi, OTOH, got lucky twice before his signature stupidity eventually won out. Spider-Man 4 is going to make Wolverine: Origins look like pure genius.

James Cameron is still bitter he didn't get to do Spider-Man.

But didn't he direct "Aquaman"? That was a summer blockbuster superhero movie, no? If I'm not mistaken, it out-grossed Spidey for opening weekend.

Admittedly, I wouldn't have cast Vincent Chase, but I think the film still holds up.

:guffaw:

Raimi didn't "get lucky twice." I thought the first Spider-Man was decent, but it had a few mild problems. With Spider-Man 2 Raimi seemed to be more confident about what he was doing and made what I consider the 3rd best superhero movie of all time. It was just that good. With the third film he compromised with the studio far too much and ended up making a glorified mess. There's every reason to believe that he's learned his lesson and that Spider-Man 4 will be far better.

I lvoe him more and more every day!

Couldn't agree more, just look at how badly they are milking The X-Men.

There's no reason to believe he's learned his lesson. He's going to turn Black Cat into "The Vulturess" or some bullshit like that. And I really doubt that it was the studios idea to put a jazz dance number in the third film. Because nothing says PURE EVIL like jazz hands. I could be wrong, but knowing what a cheeseball the guy is, I don't think I am.

As far as I know, that's just a rumor and hasn't been confirmed.

I'm with you on the scene in question. It was awful, pure and simple. There's no doubt that he went to excess with that one. However, he's done good "cheeseball" stuff too. The Rain Drops Keep Fallin' On My Head sequence in Spider-Man 2 was kind of goofy, but it really worked in the film and is one of my favorite parts of the movie.

So cut Raimi some slack. He knows people hated certain things about Spider-Man 3 and I'm sure he'll work to correct what went wrong last time around.
