James Cameron: "There are too many superhero movies"

James Cameron is still bitter he didn't get to do Spider-Man.

But didn't he direct "Aquaman"? That was a summer blockbuster superhero movie, no? If I'm not mistaken, it out-grossed Spidey for opening weekend.

Admittedly, I wouldn't have cast Vincent Chase, but I think the film still holds up.

I couldn't stand the sequel. Michael Bay was an awful replacement. However, Jake Gyllenhaal was a leg up from Vinnie Chase. No disrespect to him, but he's no Aquaman.

Oh, come on! Vinnie Chase OWNS Jake. I mean, do we even know if Jake has an entourage, never mind who's in it. And Johnny Drama beats Maggie in the older sibling stakes any day! Name one thing she's made that compares to Viking Quest!

On a serious note, I'd like to see Cameron do a superhero movie. Given his penchant for watery movies, Aquaman or Namor would be ideal (the environmental message of the latter would suit him nicely) but a Cameron Superman movie would rock. Bill Paxton for Jonathan Kent, Michael Biehn for Jor-El, Sigourney Weaver for Lara, Billy Zane for Zod. Sorted!

You're right. Viking Quest > The Dark Knight.

I also disagree with Cameron. We haven't seen Captain America, Thor, Silver Surfer, Doctor Strange, Green Lantern, and Wonder Woman, just to name a few! Oh, yeah, and let's not forget The Avengers!

Cap, Doctor Strange and Green Lantern aren't "second tier" to me - those are three of the characters I'm most interested in seeing. Silver Surfer, too, except he'd be tricky to pull off successfully.

And how about The Inhumans? They're at the tippy top of my list. Cameron probably has probably never even heard of them.

And Warlock. Favorite comic book series of all time. But I can't imagine how that could be successfully translated to movies. Maybe a miniseries, if miniseries weren't dead and superheroes in tights could work on TV.

Another one I'd love to see: The Sub-Mariner. Ironically enough Vinnie Chase is more the Namor type than Aquaman.

As for Viking Quest, I'd love to see it brought to the big screen with - wait for it - Shia LeBoeuf in the Johnny Drama role. That should honk Drama off bigtime.

I love Drama! But imagine what would happen when he gets wind of Viking Quest: The Movie and of course assumes he'll be donning the reindeer antler hat once more...

And then Shia is cast as Torvald and Drama gets offered a cameo playing Torvald's grandfather. And then watches bitterly as Viking Quest: The Movie becomes a huge worldwide box office hit.

Oh! Even worse - what if Vince were offered the role of Torvald?

I also disagree with him, since I think one of the nice things about getting down to the super heroes we're currently seeing films out of is the potential for something that's surprisingly awesome and gives that hero a larger audience and awareness.

Anyone else find the irony in the fact that Cameron says, "I think Hollywood's in a bit of a rut," when his current film, Avatar, so clearly apes many of the Dances With Wolves-esque films we've seen so often?

Not that Cameron doesn't have a point about the oversaturation of comic-book films, and not that he doesn't have a right to retell a clearly evocative storytelling theme -- but still, of all the people to go on about lack of storytelling originality, it has to come from the guy who just released a story that is, visual effects aside, little different from any number of previous films?

It'd almost be like George Lucas bemoaning the fact that certain movies nowadays have less-than-plausible dialogue.
