James Cameron: "There are too many superhero movies"

"I feel there are too many superhero movies right now," Cameron reasoned. "I think Hollywood's in a bit of a rut. They've done the good ones and they're starting to get down to the second and third tier of superheroes — the guys that would not be asked to speak at the annual superhero dinner."
I disagree that all the "good ones" have been done already; I can think of a few that I'm still waiting to see. And I hope he doesn't think Green Lantern is anything but an A-list superhero.

James Cameron is still bitter he didn't get to do Spider-Man. I mean, his other films have tanked. Who saw Titanic? Seriously.

And not enough disaster movies! When, oh when, will we get a Hindenburg epic with a saucy love story mixed in?

I wanna see James Cameron take on Superman...his mind will change.

I like super hero movies in general, but I agree somewhat with Cameron. Ant-Man the movie? I mean c'mon, there is a limit somewhere.

I also disagree with Cameron. We haven't seen Captain America, Thor, Silver Surfer, Doctor Strange, Green Lantern, and Wonder Woman, just to name a few! Oh, yeah, and let's not forget The Avengers!

And I would have hated a James Cameron Spider-Man, possibly even more than I already hate Sam Raimi Spider-Man. *sigh*

Or The Justice League. Superhero movies still have yet to tap into the vast potential they possess. I think Marvel is finally jumpstarting that with their Marvel Studio productions ... finally interweaving the characters into one cohesive whole, which will make the eventual Avengers movie all the more enjoyable.

Why do you say that? I understand you don't appreciate the Raimi version of Spider-Man and after three movies you have ample examples, but we haven't seen what James Cameron's version of Spider-Man would have been like, so how can you judge? It might have been awesome.

Absolutely. I'm not even a big fan of The Avengers but because of the interweaving of characters, I'm very interested in seeing the film.

That's a fair point. I'm willing to admit my judgment is clouded because I think Cameron is one of the overrated directors ever. I just can't see myself liking his version of Spider-Man.

A-fucking-men.

I don't swear that often, but yeah, Cameron's just vocalising here what I've thought for years.

Give Cameron a big superhero epic and I am sure he will change his tune very quickly. Superhero movies have not even scratched the surface yet. decades of awesome stories to tell.

I don't have a problem with superhero movies, or comic book movies in general. As long as they're good, what's the problem?

If we start to get a glut of really bad ones, you can expect the genre to go to sleep for a while, but so far we've had a pretty good run and only a few real stinkers.

Well now that Disney owns Marvel we can finally get the Super Micky Mouse Adventures!

Terminator
Aliens
Terminator 2
Titanic

Regardless of what you think about Titanic it was the biggest movie ever and was the biggest achievement in special effects since Jurassic Park. The man is dedicated to his craft.

If you don't think the first three movies on that list were bad-ass I can't help you, you should never watch an action movie again because there is no way you could ever possibly be satisfied. ;)

I've only seen Titantic once... what was the visual effects achievement it did? The water flooding the sets was real, so are you talking about the shots of the ship breaking up and sinking? What was ground breaking about that?

Set extensions, digital water, face mapping, CG stuntmen and actors, various models and miniatures, 744-foot(!) set...

There can NEVER be enough superhero movies.

I wouldn't go that far, but so far I think they have a very high ratio of entertainment value--most are at least worth a watch, quite a few are worth several. There are few film genres that reliable and consistent.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman
