Bale would have been a great Bond and my suspicion is that Eon originally wanted him to replace Brosnan. There was a rumour that he was reluctant to accept the Batman role as he knew it would rule him out for 007; being a Brit, he valued Bond's iconic status.

And I do think it has ruled him out. IIRC, the Bond actor isn't allowed to wear a tux in any other movie during his term. Bruce Wayne is often required to wear one. Both characters use fancy gadgets and are often assisted by an elderly sidekick (M or Q v Alfred). Both fight flamboyant villains (in particular, Bale's Batman has taken on Ras Al Ghul, the most Bond-esque villain, created in the 1970s as an equivalent to the Bond baddies). Both have ostensibly playboy lifestyles and drive cool cars. So I can't see the same actor being allowed to play both characters at the same time or even in near proximity.

I know we've been having fun with the speculation, but I'm kind of surprised that they are doing this, I mean is there a point this early? Also, Cavill isn't on the list. As we discussed before, it certainly is possible he could be done with Superman by time the next Bond is needed.

Of course, I still say Fassbender. Vaughn made Craig look so good in Layer Cake, and now he's got all the press calling MF a 'bond like Magneto'. Nothing to do but wait and debate I suppose. I can't abide Toby Stephens, his entire career is thanks to mom Maggie Smith as far as I'm concerned.

Goode - too weedy. Not seeing it.

Jackman - I would have given him the role last time out. But he's only 7 months or so younger than Craig and while Sean Connery may famously have 'made way for an older man' (in Moore), the last few times Bond has been re-cast, the new man has been a few years younger than his predecessor.

Lee Pace - Too much in the James Stewart mould, rather than the Sean Connery mould. Far too nice.

Paul Bettany - Too blond and balding. More likely to be cast as Q than 007.

Toby Stephens - they will not cast someone who has been a Bond villain in a movie. End of.

Fassbender - probably the most likely choice. Can't wait to see how the UK tabloids react to Bond being played by a German-born, Irish raised actor, who came to prominence playing IRA martyr Bobby Sands.

More importantly, how will they react to a ginger being cast as Bond? ;) But of course he's able to 'pass' as dark haired and they'll just make him hair look darker as they do in most of his movies.

Oh I dunno - I still hear people complaining about that 6 years later. :rolleyes:

If I had to lay odds I'd put it at about 90% likelihood that whenever Craig moves on and a new Bond is cast, the choice will be someone who isn't actually on any of the lists! (Same goes for the twelfth Doctor Who.)

^ I agree with you about that. Back when Brosnan was still the incumbent and we used to have 'Next James Bond' threads here, Daniel Craig never once was mentioned.

Brosnan was always going to be in the running to replace Dalton, but I don't think there's anyone that obvious out there at the minute.
 
IIRC there were tons of us pulling for Colin Salmon to get the role. I know I was, unlikely as it was going to be, he'd still be awesome as Bond. Yeah, I don't remember Craig's name coming up. He wasn't really that well known at the time obviously. I think he'd only done the excellent Matthew Vaughn flick "Layer Cake".

Chalk me up as someone else who'd have been very interested to see Salmon as Bond.

The incessant whining about Craig's hair color was IMO one of the most absurd quasi-controversies of the last decade.

I remember that Clive Owen was mentioned a lot as a possible Bond - but I'm not sure he was ever wild about the idea. I'm not sure that some of the actors mentioned, like Fassbender, will want to play Bond - he has established himself as a serious actor who does versatile roles, but any actor who gets to play Bond risks being forever identified by that role. It's a very risky move. Then again, if X-Men:First Class gets several more sequels, playing Bond may help him not be over-identified as Magneto, kind of like McKellen avoided being identified by the wide public by just one iconic big franchise role, since he played both Gandalf and Magnero.

Owen basically became the Internet's darling after Croupier and his BMW commercial, but it's my understanding that he never auditioned, nor was he ever under consideration, to be Bond after Brosnan's departure. Him always being a front-runner was little more than the Internet's version of the telephone game.
 
I think Clive Owen as interested in Bond. If you want a hint of how he might have played it, check out his Bond spoof in the first Steve Martin Pink Panther film (best part of the movie, IMO).

^ I hoping not, one of things i like most about the last two films is the lack of the Q-branch's "little toys."

The next film can only be made better by their continued absence.

Well, the "modern" Aston in Casino had a few things--a selection of gadgets we get a brief glimpse of when he pulls out the defribrilator.

At any rate--have believable modifications--ones that you can accept are there. An oil slick isn't too far-fetched, to be honest.
 
The gun compartment was believeable. The defibrillator was just there to serve a purpose later in the movie.

That's how most Bond gadgets are really.
