"James Bond 23" officially slated for 2012!

^ It's scary, isn't it? I don't get how anyone can like Toby Stephens, really. pagingnepotismformaggiesmithpagingnepotismformaggiesmith!

I like Brosnan in Remington Steele. But really, when Craig has that shower scene with Angelina Jolie in Tomb Raider. It is all steamy and he turns around after, 'Now I need a cold shower!' Layer Cake as well, but that had good support. Has his deadpan straight man Bond so far been without someone to bounce off of and thus presumed flat? I like Jeffrey Wright as Felix a lot, but he can't be there all the time.

So again, hopefully we will have some more outright happy moments with Q and Moneypenny.

Madonna is bad is DAD, but she does her scene, says what she has to, then leaves, unlike Toby Stephens and Halle Berry who just go on and on, yawn.
 
^ What's Maggie Smith got to do with DAD and the Bond movies? Yes, I know she's Toby Stephens' mum but are you really saying that he landed this movie on that basis? Or that Clint Eastwood cast him as the young Clint in Space Cowboys because of who his mother is?
 
No^ I do know the actresses apart. I'm saying the only reason he's gotten anywhere is because of who his mother is. The guy can't act.

Sofia Coppola, anyone?
 
^ Hardly the same thing. Sofia was cast by her father in The Godfather III when it was clear she was out of her depth. She hasn't had a leading role in a movie since, though she has gone on to prove that she's a fine director.

Stephens hasn't appeared in any movies directed by his mother. He's won the Charleson and Gielgud awards for his stage acting. He's appeared in a variety of tv series, tele-movies and movies. You may not rate him as an actor but are you seriously saying that he won all of those roles because of who his mother is?

It's not like she's a major box-office draw, with some grasp over directors and casting agents, is it? If she was, then why didn't her late husband, Toby's father, Roibert Stephens, an acclaimed stage actor, get more movi leading roles?

And if he's only getting these roles because of who his mother is, then why isn't Jason Connery, whose father Sean is a much bigger star than Stephens' mother, getting similar roles?
 
Maggie was bigger in the UK when he started, and I do think a lot of his boost does indeed come from her. I've simply never liked him in anything I've seen him in.

I don't know that much about Jason Connery. Haven't seen him in anything!

I did come to post this though. I'm surprised it isn't already here. Craig rumored to have signed for FIVE more Bond pictures?

I like him and would like to see him step it up as Bond, but 8 total? And he's old now, and he looks old now. And please, Moore was looking like the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come by time he got to film seven.

I hope the rumor is wrong, maybe they mean 5 total. Wasn't it 3 with a 4th option. Maybe. I just can't seem him still being good and heavy and not old come 6, 7, 8. Oiy!

I think then he would turn into Maggie Smith ;)
 
Craig is not old..he's only 43. Not that much older than Michael Fassbender who is 34 I believe. He's not signed the deal yet but only offered five more films. I'd be all for this as long as their is a continued commitment to quality and a continued journey for the Craig Bond. I kind have felt that Craig would resign for at least a couple more films after his current deal expires anyway. He is a popular Bond and his films have made money at the box office.

i like Craig as Bond. i don't think he looks old or anything...but i would hate for him to be long in the tooth as Moore.
 
I didn't even know Toby Stephens was Maggie Smith's son! Personally I always thought he was very good as Graves myself and the notion that he can't act is just ludicrous.

Daniel Craig doing 5 more films? God I hope not. I like him, I really do, but by the time Skyfall comes out he'll be 44 so add another 10 years onto that and he'll probably be the same age as Brosnan when he left the role...the difference is I'm not sure Craig will look as good by then as Pierce did. Be nice to see him do for films, or maybe 5 in total, but 7 or 8? Nah...
 
I can see him doing another two, for five in total. That'd be about right - one more than Pierce, but not enough to get into AVTAK territory...

I've noticed that people tend to confuse a character with the actor. If they hated the character, the actor must be terrible. No, the actor played the part wonderfully, but the character was just lackluster.

I wouldn't be so sure. Remember Roger Moore played Bond until he was 59, and while A View to a Kill was pants, Octopussy was considered a very strong Bond film. Sean Connery (who is actually younger than Moore by several years) came back in his mid-50s to do Never Say Never Again which wasn't a very good Bond film but he did a terrific job and could have gone on to do more if he'd wanted to. And Brosnan could still be doing Bonds today had the powers that be not decided to go with the reboot route.

I don't see any reason why Craig couldn't keep playing the role until he's 60 if he wants to and he stays in shape. It all boils down to the films themselves. If the films are good it reflects well on the actor. Roger Moore isn't everyone's cup of tea, but he made two of the best Bond films of all time - The Spy Who Loved and For Your Eyes Only, along with Octopussy which got very good reviews and is still highly regarded - when he was well into his 50s. And the attempt to replace him with James Brolin (yes, that James Brolin) in the early 80s fell though.

As long as Craig remains popular and the films keep making money and, most importantly, Craig still wants to do it, I say more power to him. Though I assume if this rumor is true, Wilson will undoubtedly include some "out" in Craig's contract, so that if he were to wear out his welcome before it expires, they'd be able to end the contract and recast Bond.

I agree about taking this report with a grain of salt, remembering so-called reputable media also reported that every surviving Bond girl was going to appear in either Die Another Day or The World is Not Enough (indeed, everyone from Ursula Andress on down), and that Sean Connery had been cast as Bond's father in either Die Another Day or Casino Royale (or was it both?).

I really hope they only mean 5 total. Regardless of how much they want to stick with Craig's Bond, don't they remember how far fetched and plastic Moore became at 7?

Fassbender has the same problem as Craig, both look a lot older than they really are. I can't picture Craig being able to cease aging in the next 10 years.




Back to Toby. :) I didn't know I needed evidence for something that was just my opinion. And yeah, Graves stinks and you can't completely fault an actor for a crappy part, but I also don't like him in Sharpe's Challenge or Jane Eyre. I don't like the guy, sorry. I've given him the benefit of the doubt, and I don't think he can act. Do you have a film he's done that you recommend as an example of his merits?

At best, you can say Toby's skills leave some doubt, but there is no mistaking that his mother is awesome. So why did the apple fall far from the tree here for me? I think she is a star, she certainly has the hardware for it. Is he too young? Too stage based where we don't see what is his best stateside? I really think that he's just giving an acting a go because of his family. It's like Joely and Natasha Richardson, was there any doubt they would become actresses?

Some people just come from acting families, and that is a critical part of their CV, oh yes indeed. You would be a fool to presume that Suri Cruise is going to get anywhere on her own merits. Some people are even desperate to connect themselves to any acting family possible. Casper Van Dien pushed the 'grandson in law to Robert Mitchum' connection for all it was worth. Nicholas Cage wanted to change his name and not be a Coppola, but he certainly took roles in Uncle Frank's films. Sherri Moon in all of Rob Zombies films, anyone? ;)


Nepotism, Hollywood is rank with it. Nothing new, but an excuse for lots of people to get lots of places. Not sure why you guys think my saying it is that big a deal?

When you state an opinion as an absolute, be prepared for criticism to support your claim. Sure, family connections help, but he isn't going to continue getting parts again and again because mom says so (especially if mom isn't in any way connected to a production).

If you suck, you suck and people won't hire you. No parent actor is that respected. Sorry, it doesn't work the way you suggest no matter who your parent is to the length it has for TS's career.

Now, you may not like him as an actor, which is fine. But don't confuse your bias with nepotism.
