Jake 2.0 vs. Chuck

I've been just watching old episodes of the cancelled show Jake 2.0 which got me thinking about Chuck and how it in some ways the two shows are similiar and others they're not. A while ago, I posted a thread on the development of the Chuck character and I noticed the development of the Jake character seems more consistent and natural than Chuck. Do you agree? And to take things farther, which show do you think is better? The show about a computer geek infected with nanites that enhances strength, vision, and speed? Or the show about another geek who has a database locked in his head?

I'm kind of torn between the two.

Jake 2.0 would be a good show to have on DVD too. The science chick on that show was way cute!

Funny thing was David Greenwalt was competing against himself. He was the head writer of Jake 2.0 on UPN. In the competing timeslot on the WB was Angel, a show that Greenwalt co-created.

Reviewing Knight and Day, one of the pundits says "It's a movie version of Chuck, but not as good, but then Chuck is awesome." Later on she suggests that anyone thinking about seeing Knight and Day should just buy a box-set of Chuck and stay at home watching it.

Heh, I remember Jake 2.0 only because it was on right after Enterprise. It seemed a decent enough show, though it didn't last long.

I really liked Jake 2.0. They made changes about halfway through the season to based on what everyone could see, like the chemistry between Jake and Diane was a lot better than Jake and Sarah.

While the premise was similar in that tech nerd becomes secret agent, they really had a very different tone. Jake 2.0 tends to be more realistic to what the television/movie industry thinks a spy agency does (or what the audience wants it to be) while Chuck is first and foremost a comedy. They get a lot of details wrong, a lot of things are exaggerated, and as long as Sarah is looking good and its funny as hell I don't really care if they get everything wrong.

Honestly, if Jake 2.0 had made it to the CW and was still on, I'd be watching it along side Chuck as I watch the shows for different reasons.

Is that the movie with Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz? I've heard truly dire things about it. Avoid at all costs.

Personally, I guess I still hold out for a crossover episode with Christopher Gorham appearing as Jake on Chuck (yeah, I know there are scheduling and rights issues, but I can dream, right?).

Offhand, I can't think of anything that would prevent the two shows from being in the same televised universe.

Chuck is a little better in my book (especially in the camp/ humor department. And it benefits from stronger overall casting. Gorham was the only cast member I really, really liked on Jake (the female scientist/tech) wasn't bad.

But while Chuck is played soft for camp and humor, Jake was played soft without really going far in humor or camp. And I think if they weren't going for humor/camp they could have been a little harder edge.

I liked Jake 2.0 and I think I would have liked to have seen why Chuck was physically able to handle what the Intersect 2.0 was doing to his body. Shouldn't he have pulled muscles the first time it went all kung-fu?

At least Jake 2.0 had the excuse of the nanites changing his body physically.


I used to like 7 Days as well, I'm not sure if Syfy still shows reruns of it or not. The one thing I was always puzzled about with 7 Days was shouldn't everyone at Backstep acted like each time they did a backstep was the FIRST TIME they EVER did a backstep except Frank? Since everytime they would do a backstep they'd go back in time thus erasing the experience of the people at Backstep who performed it (other than Frank).

Not necessarily. He'd probably be really sore the next day, though.

You're kinda right. But then, I think they also had a lot of practice doing a lot of dry runs and stuff.

To me, the tech didn't really matter. I mostly watched it for the crackling chemistry between Frank Parker & Olga Vukavitch. My favorite episode was "Nuclear Football," where someone stole the special suitcase that contains the computer that allows the President to launch a nuclear strike from anywhere in the world. Parker & Olga spend the entire episode running around Washington D.C. trying to track it down between all of the hands it passed between. At one point, they end up at a bachelor party and all the drunken frat guys will only give them the information they need if Olga strips for them. Then you have Olga trying to talk herself into it.
Olga: "How many people died in the last timeline?"
Parker: "Uh, about 4 billion."
Olga: "Music please."

You know, I had completely forgotten about Jake 2.0 until I started watching Covert Affairs and went looking for where I remembered Christopher Gorham from. I think it was most recently Harper's Island, but I was pleased to be reminded of this little show. I remember liking it, but not taping it, which is pretty much how I divided between interests and obsessions back in the pre-dvd days of my adolescence.

Personally, my favorite Christopher Gorham series (and he seems to have had several) was when he played Peter Weller's son on Odyssey 5.

I would drop a lot of money for Jake 2.0 on DVD. I'd do the same for Seven Days and especially for John Doe.

I never tried Chuck, but someday I might. I've had at least one or two friends recommend it.

It's a shame Jake 2.0 isn't on DVD. I loved that show. Ditto 7 Days and Special Unit 2.
